Four Ways to Downsize the Gimmies

Don’t let the “Gimmies” take over your home. Use the following advise to downsize the constant requests for stuff from your kids. Limit Media Exposure The number of commercial ads that our kids are exposed to on a daily basis is staggering. All of those ads have just one purpose, to sell us stuff, our kids included. The more ads our children are exposed to, the more things they will believe that they have to have. These ads are very clever at manipulating our children into never being satisfied and always wanting more. Limiting the media exposure our children receive … Continue reading

Pilot Program at Olive Garden and Red Lobster Ends

Darden, the parent company of Olive Garden and Red Lobster has decided to end its pilot program. The program cut worker’s hours down to 28 hours. The purpose was so Darden could refuse to offer workers an employer sponsored health plan. Public outcry seems to have influenced the company’s decision to end the pilot program. In October of 2012, Darden Restaurants, the parent company of Olive Garden, Red Lobster, (and others), announced that they would be implementing a pilot program. The pilot program would take place in some, but not all, restaurants. The “select number” of restaurants that were part … Continue reading

Four Not-So-Spooky Garden Helpers

Boo! It’s Halloween, and I’ve been walking into a lot of spider webs in the garden lately. This is one of the hazards of being tall: spiderwebs up the nose. Many of us are afraid of spiders, and I must admit to being a little less than friendly to them myself. Yet I love them when they’re creeping and climbing around their native environment. Their webs are beautiful, and they’re a very beneficial animal to have in the garden. Many so-called scary garden critters might seem odd to us, but I’m sure that we’d look really odd to them too. … Continue reading

Business Idea – Gardener

One example of a hobby that could translate into a home – based business is gardening. Many people enjoy tending to their own large or small flower or vegetable gardens at home. Some people like the way that gardens look but do not have the time or the desire to care for a garden of their own. These people may want to hire a gardener to plant one or more gardens in their yard and keep them maintained throughout the growing season. Being a gardener is slightly different than operating a lawn care or landscaping business. In fact, it involves … Continue reading

Spring Garden Party

For Easter, my 7-year-old daughter received a small terra cotta pot filled with plastic grass, seed packets, a hand rake, some gloves and a bunch of chocolate flowers. The candy is gone, but we’re now anxiously waiting for peppers to sprout from the pot. The cute gift came courtesy of my sister-in-law, and was nice change from the traditional Easter baskets. However, I think it would be equally appropriate to hand out as a favor at a spring garden party. In fact, you could go one better and have young guests decorate the pots with glitter glue, paint, markers, sequins, … Continue reading
