Funny Thanksgiving Layouts

Remember the Thanksgiving when Aunt Lucy made salmon instead of turkey? Okay, maybe that just happens in my family. Whether it’s being served fish instead of bird, or a pumpkin pie exploded in the kitchen, or great-grandpa fell asleep in the middle of saying grace, Thanksgiving is a hotbed for humorous scrapbook material. When you get sick of trying to figure out new and exciting ways to display photos of your family eating turkey, consider adding sidesplitting journaling supplements, funny poems or cute quips to mark the holiday. Many scrappers are afraid of adding poems to their layouts, but if … Continue reading

Magnetic Poetry Fun

Is there poetry on your refrigerator? Magnetic poetry is a great addition to your house if you have children who are old enough to read and old enough to not eat the magnets! Besides, it’s a lot more fun than regular refrigerator magnets. The magnetic poetry kits come with lots of words printed individually on small thin strips of magnets. I love having these random words on my kitchen appliances. I’ve never seen a child (or an adult for that matter) who can resist rearranging the words. Playing with words encourages original thought, experimenting with language, and creativity. It’s a … Continue reading

The calendar has been flipped, the snow is melting and drastic changes are slowly underway outside. We were provided with a great idea for documenting our … Continue reading

Acrostic Poem Fun

Here’s another writing activity that children love – because it’s all about them. It’s good for increasing vocabulary and making decisions and getting to know yourself and each other. It’s also easy, quick and fun. Acrostic poems are a word written vertically, so that each letter has its own separate line. An example for a child named Danny would be: D A N N Y Then, the fun starts as you try to think of a word for each letter in that name. Ideally each word would describe that person. “D” could be Danny, or Dinosaurs or Darling. You can … Continue reading

Personal Touches

One of the most touching layouts in my wedding scrapbook is a double page design filled with original poems written by family and friends. Granted, several of my family members are professional writers and a good chunk of my friends have careers in journalism, but you don’t have to be schooled in the world of prose in order to add a personal touch to a scrapbook page. Heck, you don’t even have to be proficient in rhyming in order to pen a poem that will make an impact on someone’s life. One of the easiest ways to spice up an … Continue reading

Adding Seasonal Touches to Scrapbooks

One step inside of a scrapbook supply shop during the month of December and you may be buried under an avalanche of Christmas-themed paper and embellishments. From Santa Claus and snowman stickers to candy cane stamps and angel-shaped die cuts, when it comes to finding ways to add holiday cheer to your seasonal scrapbook, you don’t have to look very hard to find merry materials. I am a huge fan of seasonal scrapbook stickers, rub-ons, and other page decorations; however, I also enjoy adding a little something extra to my Christmas layouts. One of the many types of filler I … Continue reading

P is for Pumpkin

October is pumpkin season! Take advantage of this wonderful time of year to engage your child in learning and the world around him. Pumpkins seem to have a charm and appeal that makes kids delight over going to the pumpkin patch. If you don’t believe me try asking your children if they would like to go to the beet farm or squash patch instead. So head on out to the pumpkin patch for some fun and learning with your kids. A pumpkin patch makes an excellent field trip. Both kids and adults can enjoy cider, hayrides, and pumpkin picking. During … Continue reading

Poetry in Schools

As a poet myself, I have a natural interest in reading poetry as well as writing it. Sadly many teachers seem to do more to turn children and young adults of poetry off than to turn them on to it. By the time they’ve insisted the poem be dissected myriad times, children have lost any joy in the poem. Sometimes poems are simply meant to be enjoyed not analyzed to death. Then let the meaning and all the rest sort of sneak up on the young person, as they think about it. I was fortunate when at school in having … Continue reading
