August is State Fair Month

The month of August is primetime for state fairs. Fun! Yesterday the Wisconsin State Fair kicked off with a new addition to its food line-up: a Krispy Kreme cheeseburger. For five bucks you can consume 1,000 calories in a single sitting by chowing down on a hamburger patty topped with melted cheese sandwiched in between a Krispy Kreme doughnut. Basically, the culinary masters, who designed the foil-wrapped heart attack, swapped the bun for a glazed doughnut and called it a day. Of course, part of the fun of attending a state fair is seeing how far you can push the … Continue reading

Family Fun At The State Fair—A Day Of Pig Races And Deep Fried Pickles

There aren’t too many places on the planet where you can watch a retired NASCAR announcer provide color commentary on a race between four pot-bellied pigs speeding around a sawdust track, and then 2 hours later gnaw unforgivably on a deep fried pork chop-on-a-stick. It happens daily at the Wisconsin State Fair. The annual 10-day event is famous around these parts for deep-fried everything, food-on-a-stick, a giant slide and world-class agricultural venues. What more could you ask for, right? That was my thought when I decided to brave the crowds (more than 800,000 descend on State Fair Park in Milwaukee … Continue reading

A Big Difference for Adopting Parents: the Adoption Tax Credit Renewed and Expanded

Whatever you think of the new health care legislation, adoptive parents will realize one benefit: the Adoption Tax Credit, which was set to expire this year, will be renewed through December 21, 2011. The maximum reimbursable limit for adoption-related expenses was raised from $12, 150 to $13, 170. In addition, the Adoption Tax Credit will benefit families who have no taxes or a very small amount of taxes due, because it is now refundable. The credit lessens for adopters with income of over$ 180,000 per year, and continues to lessen as incomes go up until it is eventually phased out. … Continue reading

Surprise Babies: Heather’s Story

This month I’m talking about surprise babies. I’ve been looking forward to sharing with you the story of one special little girl named Lillian Rose, who surprised her parents and their family with her miraculous debut. Her story begins long before she was born in 2002, when Heather and Jeremy met while working together at a local tool store. The high school sweethearts started dating two years later. On August 6, 2006, they tied the knot. About three months after they got married, they decided to start a family, but it wasn’t long before Heather realized things weren’t going to … Continue reading

It winds away from the city center, passes the San Antonio Museum of Art and the restored Pearl Brewery, and along the myriad of margarita-serving outdoor cafes and Tex-Mex restaurants. To celebrate the River Walk’s expansion several eateries and bars are offering drink and food specials throughout the summer. Nine more miles … Continue reading

Gisele Bundchen–Loving Stepmother or Insensitive Troublemaker

She’s a drop dead gorgeous multi-millionaire with a super star new husband, and now women of the world have one more reason to hate supermodel Gisele Bundchen. Apparently, marriage has made the rich (rhymes with witch) more arrogant than ever. If you missed the headlines (and the thousands of subsequent Internet posts), Bundchen is speaking out for the first time about being more than just a stepmom to John Edward Thomas Moynahan, the 18-month-old love child of her new hubby New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and his ex-girlfriend model-actress Bridget Moynahan. In the latest Vanity Fair issue, Bundchen let … Continue reading

Soap Star’s Wife Gives Birth to a Peanut

Apple meet Peanut. For real. Gwyneth Paltrow’s daughter has got nothing on “General Hospital” star Ingo Rademacher and his fiancee, Ehiku’s new son. The unfairly gorgeous couple welcomed a baby boy into the world on July 11th and decided to name their new addition “Peanut.” No joke. Peanut Kai Rademacher was delivered via a home birth at the actor’s home in Malibu and is reportedly “healthy and happy.” Rademacher, who plays Jax on the popular ABC soap opera, says he and his fiancee started calling the baby Peanut while he was “cooking inside of mommy” and decided to keep the … Continue reading
