Seasonal Fun for Families on a Budget

What family doesn’t enjoy spending quality time in the great outdoors soaking up the fantastic fall weather? Most of us would love to explore the far reaches of the country during this most magnificent time of the year, but not all of us have the financial resources to do so in a grand way. Luckily, you don’t have to be rich to enjoy the wealth of natural gems offered this time of year. Instead of dropping hundreds of dollars on a family getaway, consider sticking closer to home and attending free local fall-themed festivals, such as: California: Fortuna’s annual Apple … Continue reading

Fall Crafts For Kids

Once the days start getting shorter and there is a chill in the air the kids will be spending more time inside. It only takes a day or two for them to get bored of their toys and TV and start saying they are bored. It’s time to find some ways to entertain them. As a single mother I’m always looking for inexpensive things to do with Hailey, things that will keep her busy and allow us to spend time together doing something besides watch television. Fall really does lend itself to all sorts of inexpensive craft ideas. Just grab … Continue reading

Autumn Crafts for Kids: Fun with Leaves

Fall’s cooler temperatures have been delayed a bit here in the Upper Midwest. I, for one, couldn’t be happier, but I know many people are anxious for crisper days and the sight of trees exploding with vibrant yellows, oranges and reds (that is until they have to carve time out of their busy schedules to rake those gorgeous leaves off their driveway). Regardless of when fall finally rears its head in your neck of the woods there is nothing like soaking up the season with family members and friends. Use the time to go on a nature hike and make … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Boredom Busters for Kids

Thanksgiving is not exactly the most kid-friendly of holidays. There’s no gift exchange, no candy to pass out, and no chocolate covered eggs to find. This, of course, means that parents need to be particularly creative to keep their gaggle of little turkeys under control until the real bird hits the table. If you are on the hunt for fun ways to keep boredom at bay, consider the following Thanksgiving-themed games. DANCING WITH THE TURKEYS This is basically a knock-off of the hit ABC reality TV show where celebs and dance pros compete in the ballroom together. In this version … Continue reading

Fun Ways to Keep Your Kids Entertained on Thanksgiving

With a turkey to baste, gravy to stir, and pies to bake, the last thing you need in your kitchen on Thanksgiving is a gaggle of children constantly asking when dinner will be served. To help keep kids entertained while you are putting the final touches on your Turkey Day feast, consider placing one of your teenage (or tweenage) guests in charge of game time with these Thanksgiving-themed activities: TURKEY HUNT/CORN HUNT Last year we used the plastic turkeys from my daughter’s farm set and hid them around the house. Next, we set a 3-minute timer and sent the kids … Continue reading

Keeping Kids Busy on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving recess for school children begins a week from today in most parts of the country. Unless the time is being spent traveling, it means parents must get creative to keep their little monkeys entertained until Turkey Day. Whether you need some kid-friendly activities to keep your children busy in the days leading up to the holiday or you are looking for fun and easy crafts for kids to prepare while the bird is cooking, these next ideas might come in very handy: PLACEMATS Give each child a large piece of construction paper along with markers, glitter glue, stickers, buttons, … Continue reading

More Easy Thanksgiving Pumpkin Crafts

Pumpkins are traditionally used as Halloween decorations, but when placed strategically they can really liven up a Thanksgiving display as well. Fresh pumpkins can still be purchased at most grocery stores and some local farms, though they are not as readily accessible as they were in September and October. If you can get your hands on fresh pumpkins (for the right price), consider crafting the following Thanksgiving-themed decorations: PUMPKIN TURKEYS This project is kid-friendly and serves as a great craft to complete while your Thanksgiving turkey is cooking. Materials: Small Pumpkins Ice Pick Lollipops Colored Construction Paper Markers Directions: Poke … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Pumpkin Crafts for Kids

Just because Halloween is over doesn’t mean you should rid your home of pumpkins. Thanksgiving is an ideal time to showcase the fresh orange globes in a seasonal display. Unfortunately, most stores stop selling pumpkins the day after Halloween. This sad fact means most parents have to get creative when it comes to setting up a Thanksgiving pumpkin display. The following simple salt dough pumpkin art project was a bonafide hit with our preschool playgroup last year. All you’re doing is whipping up a batch of salt dough and shaping it into miniature pumpkins. Once the pumpkins are formed the … Continue reading

Fun Handprint Art Projects for Kids

How many of you still have the very first handprint art project your child ever made? My preschooler’s handprint turkey is still attached to my bulletin board, despite the fact that she made it nearly two years ago. The nice part of saving handprint art projects is that you can compare the new masterpieces with the old ones to see how much your child has grown. The following handprint art projects are ideal for preschoolers, although they could be tailored to toddlers and older children as well. HANDPRINT WREATH Materials: Construction paper (yellow, orange, and red, or you could use … Continue reading

Fall Fun for Kids: Acorn Art Projects

If it weren’t for Disney’s Chip and Dale I doubt my preschooler would know that chipmunks actually like acorns. As far as she is concerned, the tiny rodent-like creatures only have eyes for the stale bread she throws at them whenever we are at the park. As for the acorns that are strewn all over the grassy areas leading up to the playground, they go straight into my daughter’s pockets and come home with us. When we get home we put her acorn collection to good use by making the following projects: ACORN WREATH Materials: Acorns Wreath Form Hot glue … Continue reading
