Back to School Projects

It won't be long until kids head back to school. Since teachers are often just as anxious about the first day as students, making a thoughtful little gift for a teacher is a good way to start the new school year off on a positive note.

Paper Weight

Paint a rock or a small, thick piece of wood in a bright color. Stencil on the teacher's name. Glue felt to the bottom to keep the paperweight from scratching the desk or bookshelf.

Pencil Holder

A heavy plastic tumbler or hard plastic jar will work great. Decoupage wrapping paper or construction paper onto the cup to create a background. Then, add pictures of school related items, such as an apple for the teacher, ABCs, pencils, crayons, rulers, etc. Add trim or lace around the top edge, glue felt to the bottom, and add the teacher's name if desired.

Apple Basket

While few children bring an apple for the teacher these days, it's still a cute idea. Pick up a small basket and let your child decorate with craft paint. Add fabric inside to line the basket. Make a little plaque that says Apples for Teacher, and attach it. Fill the basket with a fresh apple or two or use artificial apples.

Mugs

Pick up an inexpensive coffee mug and let your child fill it with fresh flowers. Cut flowers from your garden or pick wildflowers. If you don't have access to any flowers, pick up an inexpensive bunch at the store or florist. Even after the flowers are gone, the teacher can use the mug.

Touch Teacher's Heart

Fill a small basket with some extra school supplies that the teacher can offer to children who do not have their own supplies. Since teachers often purchase these items out of pocket, your child's teacher will appreciate the gesture. It's also important to teach our children that there are people in need, and that it's good to help out when possible.
