Birdseed Pinecones – Wintertime craft project

Wintertime can be rough on our fine-feathered friends. The ground is often cold and hard and those tasty worms are not as readily available for aviary consumption. Your family can help the birds out and have a heck of a lot of fun in the process. Make a BIRDSEED PINECONE. A Birdseed Pinecone will provide much needed wintertime food for the birds in your neighborhood (the birds will also appreciate your efforts during the other three seasons as well). They can be made easily and without much expense at all. This activity is loads of fun for kids of all … Continue reading

Bunny Scissors and Catalog Shopping

Hi there, it sure has been a while. I am back from a short hiatus to bring you more fun ideas for your whole family. My toddler is growing by leaps and bounds, now a touch older than 3 1/2, and one of her summertime accomplishments was learning how to use scissors – properly and safely. While in France last year I bought her the cutest pair of kiddie scissors with a bunny holster that, with the help of a magnet, sticks to the refrigerator. They wound up being a stocking stuffer last Christmas, but she did not start using … Continue reading

Cereal Necklaces

I saw a little girl today wearing a Cheerios cereal necklace. Every once in a while she took a bite and I could tell she was very happy with herself. I smiled at her pride in her “jewelry”. My kids made cereal necklaces in preschool, too. It’s a very quick and easy project. You can even throw math or pattern repetition into the project too – if you use multi-colored cereal like Fruit Loops. Take a piece of yarn that is big enough to go around the child’s head plus a few inches. Tie a large knot on one end. … Continue reading

Bird watching

Did you know that there are 10,000 species of birds on our planet? Did you ever wonder how many you’ve seen? Some serious bird watchers (birders) keep a list of how many birds they’ve seen. They have rules for these lists. More than one person has to see the bird and agree with its identification, or a solidarity birder might take a photograph. They call their “birds I’ve seen list” a “life list”. I think keeping a life list would be a fun project to do as a family. We’ve never kept an official list, but we are all amateur … Continue reading

Frugal Holiday Fun

The holidays don’t have to be all about spending money on gifts and decorations. Honestly, I can’t understand the craziness of going out to one hundred stores to find the must-have toy or electronics item, or spending a fortune on last minute gifts just because you have to have something for someone you barely know. Although we don’t always succeed (yes, I am guilty of running out last night to the card store to get gifts for teachers my son doesn’t even have), we try to focus on family during the holiday season. Here are my favorite ways to have … Continue reading

The Many Uses of a Gift Box

Other than pine needles, I do not know of anything in greater abundance this time of year than gift boxes. Whether they are laying around as leftovers from last year or freshly folded flat and nestled inside of the new bags full of goodies you are just now carrying through the door, there are bound to be a few extra gift boxes laying around your home right now. Gift boxes are extremely useful as ingredients in crafty projects, storage solutions and as toys themselves. Consider the following alternative applications for a lonely odd-man-out gift box that is not fortunate enough … Continue reading
