Bookmarks for Kidsby Sherry Holetzky | More from this Blogger 09 Jun 2006 04:43 AM Simple and cute! We all know that reading is important. Reading often and learning to read well both help children do better in school and help them become more well-rounded individuals. Since most kids probably won't want to sit and read for long stretches of time during the summer, encourage your children to read one chapter, or even a few pages, every day. Help them find great books or pick out a few exciting stories at the library then make these fun bookmarks so they won't lose their page from day to day. Items needed:
The craft stick will be the body of the bookmark. The top part that shows above the pages can be decorated however a child likes. It's best to start with a firm material such as craft foam or cardboard to cut out the shape of the image you want to use. Then, it can be decorated with paints, markers, felt, and fabric. One child might want to cut out and attach a football to a bookmark, while another child might prefer a smiley face, a flower, or a puppy. You can use clip art images printed from your computer and trace them on the back of the felt or foam if you aren't up for drawing. When finished putting together the image, glue it to a foam or cardboard backing. Allow it to dry, then glue or staple it to the top of the craft stick. The rest of the craft stick can be painted, covered with felt, or your child can write his or her name on it or add stickers. You might want to purchase a large package of craft sticks and plenty of felt, so your child can make bookmarks for every member of the family!
