Bringing in the Scents

I made a very uncharacteristic purchase the other day. Normally, the plants that grow in my garden are of the useful variety. Sure, some of them are also beautiful, but I grow them for food and for fiber and for medicine and for wildlife. I’m not really a gardener who plants for beauty. However, the other day I walked into the garden store with some birthday money. This is usually a bad idea, because it makes my birthday money disappear. I saw a plant. That plant was tall and it had very large flowers. It’s a lily. I bought it. … Continue reading

Taking Your Camera Outside During the Winter

I will be the first to admit that most of the photos I take during the winter months are inside shots. Being that I was born and raised in Hawaii it is hard enough for me to expose my body to the brutal Wisconsin winter elements, let alone my prized camera. But, as I’ve discovered in the last couple of years, blaming Mother Nature is a bad excuse for missing frameworthy shots of my daughter sledding down a hill or making a snow angel in the front yard. So in 2008 I am resolving to get out more… and take … Continue reading

Bringing in the outside

My girl ran to the first dandelion to appear in our front yard this spring and promptly yanked it out. No, she was not weeding for me that was just a pleasant byproduct of her excitement for springtime. She carried that little yellow symbol of both April and a messy yard all the way to the market and back home again, even though the time spent in the hot car while we shopped made the weed a limp and sad shell of what it once was. When we arrived home, I ran around our side yard, which was covered in … Continue reading

Bringing Home the Bacon

So who brings home the bacon in your household? I don’t even remember what commercial that phrase comes from. The point behind bringing home the bacon is that this is the person upon whom the family relies for their food, their shelter and their survival. The stereotype says that daddy brings home the bacon and momma fries it up in a pan. But many married couples today come from families where at least one divorce occurred and may not have been raised by a single father, a single mother, grandparents or any combination thereof. So when it comes to getting … Continue reading

The Hazards of Distracted Parenting

Humans can become distracted every now and again. Parents are only human and cannot be hyper focused on their children every second.
