My Daughter’s Birthday Part I

Time goes by far too quickly, I know this to be so true.  The preparations for my daughter’s first birthday began a few days before her birthday as I tried to enjoy the last few days before she turned one and officially becoming a big girl! I was going to throw her a little party with her family, aunts, uncles, cousins (she only has three two of which are her age), and grandparents. I anticipated about fifteen to eighteen extended family members to come to my daughter’s birthday celebration. My daughter’s birthday is a mere nine days before Christmas, so … Continue reading

Are Separate Birthday Parties Necessary?

Is your child’s birthday one more day that you dread because you have to figure out how to share it with your ex? When I was first divorced Hailey’s birthday loomed over me like a dark cloud. I didn’t want it to be one more holiday that she would have to split between mom and dad’s house. That first birthday after the divorce was hard. Hailey was sad, her family was glaringly divided. After that year I decided never again. I wanted Hailey’s birthday to be a celebration for and about her. So I called my ex husband and hashed … Continue reading

My Son’s Birthday Party Part I

Summertime is a very busy birthday season for our family. My husband, son, and I all have summer birthdays. We also have six other extended family members (siblings and parents) that have summer birthdays. Combine the birthdays with the other summertime celebrations (like the Fourth of July) and we get a summer full of parties! We recently celebrated our son’s third birthday. We had a very nice and intimate party with just our family (mommy, daddy, birthday boy, and baby sister) on the morning of our son’s birthday. Daddy had to leave for work mid morning, so I planned a … Continue reading

Birthdays

My son is obsessed with birthdays (I suppose I am too since I love to bake). The little guy is only two and his own birthday experience is quite limited (I doubt that he actually remembers his first birthday). However, he has helped celebrate many birthdays in his short two years (and nine months) … sometimes the same birthday twice! Since we have moved back to our home town where most of our extended family lives, we have had lots of birthdays to celebrate. Birthdays of aunts, uncles, cousins, grandparents, and mom and dad and himself. There is one thing … Continue reading

Birthday Parties to Remember

The countdown to my daughter’s birthday party is on. However, unlike in years past when she decided on a theme for her shindig two weeks after Christmas, this time around the jury is still out. With time ticking I came up with a list of potential themes that I could probably pull off without enlisting Martha Stewart or Colin Cowie’s help. Here are just some of the fun, fun, fun suggestions my daughter will be choosing from: Bugs: My mom is a ladybug fanatic and has all kinds of decorations we could use for the party. Granted, my daughter is … Continue reading

Toddlers and Holidays

Sometimes, it is interesting to think about how and when children come to understand the meanings of the various holidays that their families celebrate. Of course, much of the understanding (or lack thereof) comes from how “into” each particular holiday a child’s parents are. For example, I am not sure whether Dylan understands a whole lot about Christmas because my husband and I have not been overly focused on teaching him about it. He understands Thanksgiving more, because that is our favorite holiday. St. Patrick’s Day is this weekend, and at not quite two and a half years old, Dylan … Continue reading

We Are Cut Out Of The Holidays

Well I do not need to wait to tell you how our holidays are going to be with my in laws. This has been a horrible in law week. My kids have asked that for the gift exchange with Grandma and Grandpa on my husband’s side to be done without their Aunts, Uncle or cousin. They all have asked that the only people there are them and our family. We wanted to do a separate get together with the Aunt, Uncle and cousin. You may be asking why they wanted to do that and I will be more than happy … Continue reading

Happy Hobbit Day!

Fans of Tolkien celebrate September 22 as the birthday of two of his most famous characters. By “Shire Reckoning”, both Bilbo Baggins and Frodo Baggins would be celebrating their birthdays today. Hobbit Day has been celebrated for around thirty years now. Here is a brief look into the Baggins family tree. J.R.R. Tolkien is the author who wrote “The Hobbit”, and “The Lord of the Rings” trilogy. If you haven’t read at least one of those books yourself, then you probably saw the movies. I can remember watching the animated version of “The Hobbit” when I was a kid. Fans … Continue reading

E’s First Birthday Party

I knew that Baby E’s birthday was coming. It really should not have been any kind of a surprise that Baby E was going to be one. I just wasn’t so sure how I wanted to ring in the day. I knew I wanted to celebrate with her; I didn’t know how big of a celebration I wanted to have. All of E’s grandparents were planning to visit to help her change from baby to toddler status. Grammy and Papa were arriving the Tuesday before her birthday and Grandma and Grandpa were coming after. The kids, Daddy, and I were … Continue reading
