Clay Tube Beadsby Laura Torres | More from this Blogger 21 Jan 2006 05:24 PM These are maybe the easiest and most versatile clay beads for you to make with your kids. They can do most of the work on their own, but will need your help with the slicing. Learn how to make a simple tube bead first and then you can add swirls, dots, or your own original decoration. The possibilities with these beads are endless. Here, I've sewn them onto a foam picture frame. They make great jewelry, bookmarks, keychains, or anywhere you put beads.
Basic Tube Bead 1. Make an even snake of clay, about 1/2 inch thick. Roll the snake flat with a smooth drinking glass or rolling pin.
2. Place a skewer or large wire in the middle of the clay. Wrap the clay around the skewer and smooth the seam with your finger.
3. If you are going to add dots or swirls, do it now. Gently roll the clay with the skewer in it to smooth. 4. Place the skewer over a pan as shown and slice the clay all the way around to form beads. If you want the beads all the same size, use a ruler and mark 1/2 - or 3/4-inch segments with the tip of the knife. Bake according to the directions on the clay package, right on the skewer or wire. After the beads are baked and cooled, slide them off the skewer.
Swirl Roll a long, skinny snake of a contrasting color and twist it around the clay on the wire after step 2.
Gently roll the whole wire so the twist becomes smooth with the base clay. Polka Dotty Make tiny balls of clay and stick to the clay on the wire after step 2.
Gently roll the whole wire so the balls flatten and are smooth with the base clay.
