Homemade Root Beer Experiment

Do your kids like root beer? One of my children wanted a homemade root beer kit for Christmas. He didn’t get it. The kit looked complicated and was expensive. To create the root beer involved steeping roots and sterilizing bottles. It didn’t sound like much fun to me. A few days ago at the store we spotted Root Beer Concentrate next to the vanilla and peppermint extracts. One the back was a simple recipe for root beer so we tried it. In a saucepan you bring one and a half cups water to a boil. Stir in ¾ c up … Continue reading

Cooking With Kids – Root Beer Floats

I love simple recipes for teaching children how to measure, mix, and cook. Here’s a fun dessert that even very young children can make with little or no help. There’s no stove or even measuring involved. And it only takes a few minutes to make. Root beer floats! All you need is a tall glass, vanilla ice cream, and some root beer soda. Put a couple of scoops of ice cream in the glass. Slowly add the root beer, or the glass will fill up with foam instead of soda. Add a straw if you want, and enjoy. That’s all … Continue reading

Experimenting with Ice Cream Sandwiches

Valorie’s blog on Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches made me remember a fun ice cream place from my college days. It was called Serendipity. To get there you had to go down a tiny staircase. The store was actually below sidewalk level. And since serendipity means an accidental discovery of something pleasant, valuable, or useful, I thought the name of this tiny little ice cream store fit perfectly. They sold all kinds of ice cream, but my favorite was their design– it –yourself ice cream sandwiches. First you picked from chocolate, sugar, oatmeal, or chocolate chip cookies. These were large fresh-baked … Continue reading

In-Home Restaurant

My girl is at that age where she is excited and eager to help out and be involved in everything that is going on in and around the house. She wants to help pour the milk into her cereal bowl, throw dirty clothes into the washer, pull weeds in the garden or anything else we are working on – she wants to lend a hand with all of it! It is quite lovely and incredibly endearing. I sincerely hope she stays this enthusiastic about being a helper. One recent evening, when Grandmom and Grandpop were visiting, I decided to make … Continue reading

A Spring Ice Cream Tradition

We are lucky to have a tiny independent ice cream stand in our town. It’s one of those you name it they have places – everything from burgers, hot dogs, onion rings and fries, to every kind of ice cream and slushes. We all have our favorites. My husband is partial to the sickeningly sweet suicide slush (all flavors in one cup so you get a lot of syrup). Until last year, they’ve always closed “for the season” in the winter months. Every year we kept an eye out for when they re-opened. We joked that along with Girl Scout … Continue reading

Family Fun Week in Review

What a week in Family Fun! We learned new ways to store old things, were prompted to reflect on our history and were given a few wonderful ideas to make Valentine’s Day fun for our kids at school. More than anything though, this past week made our mouths-water with talk of succulent ribs, grocery store samples, root beer floats and fresh fruit salad. As always, the family fun bloggers were hard at work filling our minds with inventive ideas for pleasant activities and humorous escapades all while trying to expand our collective waistline! Lauri offered a Project Box to both … Continue reading
