Hot Cocoa Part I

One of the things I love about the cooler autumn weather is the excuse to make and drink (of course) hot cocoa. A nice hot cup of cocoa seems like the perfect diversion on a cold rainy day. After a week of cold raining days, I finally made the effort to restock my hot cocoa making supplies (with all the baking I have been doing my chocolate stash was completely depleted). It took several batches with different ingredients and techniques in order to get the ratios correct for a perfectly decadent cup of cocoa. When I announced to my husband … Continue reading

Indoor Fun For Toddlers

It has just occurred to me that the other day, I had written a post which alluded to writing a future post about indoor activities for toddlers. Before I forget to write that post (again), here it is. Cooler weather is here, so get ready to get cozy and have some fun. Keep a box full of interesting pieces of clothing that the kids can use to dress themselves up as whatever characters they wish to create. Encourage them to give their characters unique voices, and listen as they entertain you with their stories. Dylan has not done any in … Continue reading

Wet and Wild Summer Fun

The heat is on in our neck of the woods. The oppressive heat and humidity that has been baking the center of the country for the last few days is now bearing down on the Midwest. Tomorrow’s high is expected to top 92 degrees and with heat indexes pushing 110. As a result, the National Weather Service has issued excessive heat warnings, and tonight our local TV meteorologist suggested that we remain in air conditioned buildings for the next five days. Clearly, the guy is not a parent. No kid, especially my little fish, is going to want to be … Continue reading

Warm Weather Car Safety

Depending on where you live, winter can be long, depressing, and, let’s face it, cold. When warm weather arrives, many of us can hardly wait to get outside. There are parks to visit, playgrounds to explore, and beaches to comb. And yet, with all the fun surrounding warm-weather outings, some precautions need to be taken when traveling with a baby. Before you even place your child in the car, check the car seat, especially any metal buckles or other metal parts. These can get extremely hot during a warm day, especially if they are in the direct sunlight. The last … Continue reading

Stay Cool and Comfortable This Summer

Summer doesn’t have to be a miserable time of year if you are pregnant. While it may be hot, and even more so for those with raging pregnancy hormones, it also affords plenty of opportunities to cool down by the pool, in breezy sun dresses, or with chilled beverages and ice cream. Besides offering great, low impact exercise, swimming is a great way to cool off during the sweltering summer months. You may even find swimming easier because pregnant bodies are naturally more buoyant. There are tons of swimsuits out there to fit your new curves and your style. Check … Continue reading

Hot Pavement and Pets

It may well be the hottest day of the year — so far, which isn’t saying much considering it’s not even officially summer yet. The Weather Channel reports that it is currently 88 degrees Fahrenheit, and I just got back from a quick walk with the doggies. They don’t much like the heat — both are doublecoated dogs, which is a lot of fur to carry around on sunny days! But this afternoon the problem wasn’t the fur but the floor. As we walked on the blacktop parking lot, both dogs started limping. Curious, I slipped off one shoe and … Continue reading

November Fun

November is one of my favorite months. In Colorado the weather turns cool enough for coats and fires in the evening, but the afternoons are mostly sweat shirt weather, not windy or cold. It’s a great month to get in some last hikes and outside activities before the true winter cold hits. I also like that November is a month of gratitude. This month I plan on sharing a lot of ideas for incorporating thankfulness and gratitude into daily life. November is a month that I find to be very creative. This time of year I always want to start … Continue reading

FYI: Cool Pet/Animal Tip Offs Fellow Families.com Members Have Shared With Me

The other day I wrote about My Life as a Pets Blogger Parts I and II, but something I forgot to mention is how sometimes people pass neat stories or otherwise pet-related info my way. (Like Aimee did with an article that I referenced in Michael Vick Learns Animal Lovers Are a Force to Be Reckoned With.) Well, Aimee’s done it again, but so have a couple of others. I’d like to share with you what they shared with me, because you might find it equally interesting. The Michael Vick Pet Chew Toy This one came to me again courtesy … Continue reading
