Coordinating Halloween Costumes

I'm not a matchy-matchy kind of mom. I've never once considered buying coordinating mother/daughter dresses, nor have I ever honored the request to dress my child in an outfit that complemented her cousin's.

However, when it comes to Halloween costumes, I'm a little more flexible. For some reason, I have a soft spot for matching Halloween costumes, especially when children are involved. To me, nothing is more adorable than seeing two kids standing at your front door wearing coordinating costumes.

If you want your kids to complement each other this Halloween, then consider the following costume ideas:

Elmo and Cookie Monster: These costumes are readily available in stores, though you can make affordable versions by purchasing red and blue sweatsuits and embellishing each with a little fur.

Uncle Sam and the Statue of Liberty: This idea is better suited for older children looking for a unique couple's costume to wear to a Halloween party at school. Most tweens are more willing to dress up when they have someone to partner up with.

Santa Claus and Mrs. Claus: These costumes are ideal for children trick-or-treating in colder climates. If you live in a warmer region, have Santa and Mrs. Claus don Hawaiian shirts, shorts and flip-flops and pretend they are on vacation.

Easter Bunny and an Easter Egg: The Easter egg costume can be fashioned from a large piece of cardboard, while the Easter Bunny costume can be found at most costume shops. Otherwise, you can make your own bunny costume from a white sweatsuit and construction paper ears affixed to a headband.

Joseph and Mary: For children whose parents prefer to celebrate All Saints Day instead of Halloween, consider attending a church sponsored party as these Biblical favorites. Brown and blue bathrobes make great bases for these costumes.

Cheerleader and Football Player: Both of these costumes are readily available at stores, but if you have a son in a peewee football league, you can save a ton of money by having him wear his uniform on Halloween.
