Dress Up Play for Boys

Dress up boxes for little girls are easy to put together, but what can you do for little boys? Boys like to put on different clothes and have fun pretending too. I thought I’d share some of the things that have been in our costume box. Hats are fun and easy. And sometimes it’s all kids need to start rolling on a pretend game. When my oldest was a toddler, I bought a set of plastic hats that all my kids loved. There was a fireman’s hat, a construction hard hat, a police hat, and a motorcycle helmet. It was … Continue reading

Gorilla and a Cage Costume

I’ve been busy for the last few days making a costume. I don’t know how I get trapped in these things. Two years ago we went to a small local amusement park on the Sunday before Halloween. The park had advertised a half off day for anyone in costume. They even let the children trick or treat in the gift shops and we got to ride all the rides we wanted. The park had a costume parade and invited all the children to participate. My oldest, dressed as a zombie, won $25 for the scariest costume. The next year we … Continue reading

MyTwin Up to 85% Off

MyTwin is a great concept. You custom order dolls that match your little girls’ characteristics. So if that black haired, tanned skin, green-eyed doll seems impossible to find, have it made instead. Choose from five different skin tones and nine different hair colors. Then upload a picture of your princess, and they’ll custom paint her eyebrows, cheeks, and lips. Yes, even her freckles or her beauty mark. Then they style the doll’s hair to match the photo. It’s not cheap. With taxes and shipping, it comes to about $150. However, it’s probably the last doll you will buy. We have … Continue reading

The American Girl Place in New York is a Mecca of female adolescent wonder and commerce. Three floors stocked full of American Girl dolls! If you have a daughter or little girl in your life, American Girl has taken the steps to manufacture a doll that is an 18-inch look-a-like, with their “Just Like Me” series. For younger kids, such as our daughter, American Girl offers a line … Continue reading

Family Dance Party

My family loves music and loves to dance around the house. Just about every night you can see us (if you were peering into our windows, which would be kind of odd) prancing, dancing, skipping or strutting around our living room. We are usually listening to something my daughter loves best – right now that would involve, primarily, the soundtracks to Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Mary Poppins and the eight catchy, well-crafted tunes (along with the beautifully illustrated storyboards) on the Gustafer Yellowgold DVD. We don’t have any structure to these dance parties. We pop in one record (or … Continue reading

Secret Codes and Spies

Kids love to play spy. My boys drool over all the fancy spy toys at the store. Those toys are fun, but you don’t need special toys to be a spy. Spies do need undercover disguises though. Dig through the dress-up box. They might also like some sunglasses, a flashlight, and one of Dad’s hats. And spies need secret codes for their messages. (Don’t tell them that they are reading and writing, and using logical thinking skills.) You should tell them that coding and decoding messages is a science called cryptology. One of the simplest codes is to write words … Continue reading
