What Really Happened During This Field Trip?

Funtastic Cafe is located in Tamarac, Florida. Recently, a Summer camp for children who have special needs took a group there for what was, essentially, a field trip. Things did not go as planned. The owner says the kids were unsupervised. Others say that the owner treated the children from the camp in a way that wasn’t professional or appropriate. What happened? The Funtastic Cafe is “the fun upscale mega indoor party and play center for safe recreational family play”. It has a toddler area for little ones, and an area for kids who are twelve years old or younger. … Continue reading

Sonic and Flo are Selling Insurance

Sonic the Hedgehog has made an appearance in a commercial for Progressive Insurance. He zips around as fast as he can until Flo, the Progressive “spokesperson”, stops him. I cannot imagine why Progressive has decided to give a cameo to a video game character from the early 1990’s. I think most people would recognize Flo. She is the perky, overly optimistic, cheerful, women in the Progressive Insurance commercials. Last year, she was declared the winner of a bracket game where different ad icons were pitted against each other, in order to find out which one was the most popular. Flo … Continue reading

Family Fitness With Your Toddler

If we want to prevent future health problems in our children, then we need to be encouraging fitness while they are young. If they start off life with exercise and healthy eating, they are more likely to continue it into their adult years. So I am going to be writing a series on how you can incorporate family fitness into your home. And believe it or not, it starts with your toddlers. Once children start walking, they have the opportunity to begin a healthy lifestyle. That means allowing your child to walk, not always confining them to a stroller. If … Continue reading

Fitness Programs for Pets

Just like with humans, one half of the key to pets losing weight is for them to receive more exercise. Did you know that many veterinary centers and other groups across the country actually offer pet fitness programs? If you’re not sure how to help your pets lose weight, if everything you’re doing just doesn’t seem to work, or maybe you just don’t have the extra time to spend to help your pet shed those pounds, check to see if you have any such programs in your area. Public pet fitness programs have the added benefit of being extra social … Continue reading

Be a Healthy Example to Your Children

We really are our kid’s best example. While we strive to make healthy changes to our lifestyle, we should be making sure that our children embrace the same desire. If we don’t pass on a healthy lifestyle to our children, then we are just setting them up for future health problems, let alone self esteem issues. Obesity is a real problem in this country and it is becoming an increasingly significant problem amongst children. It is easier for children to not be active—computers, television, video game systems, iPods and the like are drawing children to become couch potatoes. As parents … Continue reading

Football Fun for Kids

It’s down to the final four in the NFL. The Jets, Colts, Vikings and Saints go head-to-head this weekend to see who will duke it out in Super Bowl XLIV. It’s great news for rabid football fans, but what about the kids of fanatical football fans? At most football viewing parties the kiddos are relegated to the basement while the adults whoop it up in front of the big screen. This year why not try something a little different and get the kids involved in the party? Believe it or not there are fun ways to include kids in game … Continue reading

Bad Weather and Active Pets

Fall and winter in the Pacific Northwest often means rain. And rain means MUD! There are days I want to walk my dogs in hip boots and a full-length coat (at least I have the coat, in a muddish shade of brown so the splatters don’t show). There are some days I don’t want to leave the house at all. Lally (my boxer mix) is the same way! She’s a funny little girl: she hates the rain, and hates getting wet. On days when the skyfall is constant, it’s hard to get her more than a few steps outside the … Continue reading

Organizing the Family Room (1)

In my home the family room always seems to be the last town in Dodge. What I mean by that, and this is a secret confession, is that on weekends, I will sometimes banish the rest of the family to that room so I can do good cleaning of the rest of the house. And, no matter how often I pick up the house during the day, the family room is always in chaos by the end of the night. I am hoping that with a bit of organization, I can tame the room and make it easier to maintain. … Continue reading

Throwing a Puppy Shower—Step 3: Games

What would a shower be without games? Here’s some suggestions for games you could play at your puppy shower –with both human and canine guests. Games for Human Guests • Guess Pup’s Weight: Provide pens and slips of paper for everyone to write down what they think your new puppy weighs. Closest wins! (Make sure they also include their names so you know who guessed what.) • Agility Course: This one will also be under the canine guest list, but wouldn’t it be fun to see their people run it too? Fastest time wins! (Might have to improvise on some … Continue reading
