Children’s Literature – American History for Kids

Introducing children to history and politics may be a tricky thing to manage. How old does a child need to be before it is fair game to discuss the American Revolution and the Founding Fathers? At what point do you venture into a conversation about the presidents and the role of politics in our daily lives? These are tough questions and while I do not have the exact answers for what is best for you and your family, I can suggest two books that do a fine job of teeing up the discussion of these very topics. John, Paul, George … Continue reading

DIY Kids Books

Looking for a great activity for the book lover in your home? Need an imaginative gift for a young friend or family member? I have just the thing for you, a Do-It-Yourself (DIY) Kids’ Book. Illustory, a pre-fab layout product that allows your child to draw pictures, write out their story and ship it off to the manufacturer … Continue reading

DIY Kids Art Show

As anyone with a child knows, there are a lot of crafts, doodles, scribbles, paintings, and torn out pages of coloring books that pass through our lives. We see everything from a circle of cheerios glued on to a page to a sheet of white paper with just one big red crayon line on it. The myriad of art that our kid’s produce in their young lives is staggering, to save it all for one child, let along multiple kids may require the renting of a U-Store It facility! Genealogy Inspiration And Information On Pinterest

Pinterest is a fun and somewhat addictive website where users create online pinboards with images of things that they like. I like to visit the site a couple of times a week to get ideas for meals and for ideas for fun things to do with the kids. Today, I looked around on Pinterest and found that it can be a great site to visit when you need inspiration for your genealogy. Beautiful ideas for family photos, family photo displays, and other projects can be found there, as well as links to interesting genealogy blogs. There are also beautiful ideas … Continue reading

Love You Forever

Love You Forever, written by Robert Munsch. If you have not read this book to your child you need to, especially if you have a son, although as the mother of a daughter it was always one of our favorites as well. The story is short and well paced, and funny. It will keep your children’s attention and the repetition throughout guarantees that after just a few readings your kids will be reading it along with you. This helps with word recognition for the pre readers in your family. This short little book starts with a mother holding her newborn … Continue reading

Super Scrapbook Savers

Most people don’t realize that they can create a scrapbook without actually buying a tradtional 12 by 12 memory book. If you are scrapping on a very tight budget, then consider embellishing a standard binder, photo album or a plain hardcover journal with stickers, stamps, die-cuts or patterned paper. Another option is to punch holes in cardstock and bind the paper together with pretty ribbon to make a mini scrapbook. The only problem you may run into when fashioning together a budget DIY scrapbook is that your page may not have the same protective covers found in traditional scrapbooks. If … Continue reading

Children’s Literature – Stories of Acceptance for Toddlers and Preschoolers

Odd Velvet By Mary E Whitcomb Illustrated by Tara Calahan King Chronicle Books, 1998 I feel a deep sense of connection to Velvet, the title character of this story of acceptance and uniqueness by Mary E. Whitcomb. I was (and still am) a bit of an odd ball. Like Velvet, I never felt a strong connection to the masses, although, also like Velvet, I never seemed to be too bothered by this fact. Odd Velvet is a modernly illustrated and charming tale representing a childhood utopia, of sorts. Certainly we who are oddballs ourselves, or are parents of oddballs, would … Continue reading
