Do Crafts Anywhere

Here are some good ideas that will allow you to work on crafts most anywhere without worrying about the mess.

Baking Pans

Use a cookie sheet, or better yet, a sheet cake pan as a craft tray. You can line it with paper towels or newspapers as necessary, and then toss the mess. Take the tray outside and spray it off with the hose during good weather, or wipe the tray to remove paint, glue, or solvents, and then wash it up in the sink. Your traveling work station can go almost anywhere.

Muffin tins also make great paint pans and they won't get knocked over or spilled as easily as individual paint cups. Set a muffin tin inside your sheet pan, or attach it to the pan with double faced foam tape to keep it in place. Leave one or two muffin cups free of paint and use them for cleaning or resting brushes.

Instant Craft Smock

People often create makeshift craft smocks from plastic grocery bags or trash bags, by cutting a hole in the bottom and making holes for arms to slip through. This is handy, but many parents worry about using plastic bags with smaller children. You obviously don't want to leave any child unsupervised with plastic bags, but kids can sometimes become endangered very quickly. To avoid these fears, use waxed paper. Remove a large piece from the roll, fold in half and cut a hole in the fold. Slip over your child's head, and tape the sides together below his or her arms.

Storage Containers

A large yet shallow plastic storage container, such as the type generally used to slide under the bed for extra storage makes a great workstation for crafts. It's shallow enough for small arms to reach into, yet deep enough to protect other surfaces from spills. Place the container on the table or the floor and the kids can make crafts without worrying about messes. The only thing you'll have to clean is the container, instead of the entire kitchen or playroom!
