Puppy Party Fun

Happy birthday, Haka! My neighbor’s dog turned 13 last week and to celebrate she threw him a super soiree that outdid parties I’ve attend for humans. Of course, my neighbor treats her dog like a child—even though he is 91 in human years—so a full-blown pooch party really is not an unexpected move on her part. She requested that human guests dress up like dogs to make the birthday pup feel loved. My 6-year-old wore a white sweat suit that I decorated with black fabric spots and I wore a store-bought doggie Halloween mask, black pants and a black shirt. … Continue reading

Doggone Good Fun

My 5-year-old loves dogs. So much so that she often wonders aloud: “Why didn’t God make me a dog instead of a girl?” My response: “Dogs aren’t allowed to eat chocolate.” That usually puts an end to her I-wanna-be-a-dog monologue. (My little puppy dog.) There’s no way we can raise a dog at the moment, so to placate my daughter I try to come up with ways to incorporate doggy-themed fun into our days. Here are some of her favorites puppy-themed projects: CANINE CARDS Materials: Card stock or construction paper Scissors Markers or crayons Googly eyes Glue Directions: Cut the … Continue reading

The Pets Blog Week in Review for October 29 – November 4

The new format worked so well I think I’ll stick with it again this week. Ready? Here we go…let’s see what Aimee and I wrote last week: Monday, October 29 More Viral Animal Emails: Doggone Hysterical Cartoons aren’t just for the funnies anymore. These days people can share them with everyone in their email address book. I talked about some that friends had shared with me that tickled my funny bone. Common Saltwater Fish Diseases Aimee talked about the diseases that saltwater fish are susceptible too, many of which are the same that affect tropical fish. She gave a list … Continue reading

A Warning for Parents with Pet-Loving Kids

That’s my daughter with her pet snake. Okay, that slithery creature never actually made it home with us.  Thank goodness!  However, other slimy critters have sauntered, swam and slipped into our lives due in large part to my child’s obsession with being a pet owner. We’ve had Lola, Pongo, Charlie and Charlie II. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of exotic animals, but when you are a parent of a pet-loving kid, you learn to master the fine art of sacrifice. You also learn the importance of doing research on the type of varmint your child so desperately wants to … Continue reading

Crushed

I am that mom. The mom whose heart breaks every time she sees her child in pain. The mom who feels just as bad watching another mother’s child hurt. After all, once you join the sorority of motherhood then another mother’s pain is your pain. I felt that way reading Stephanie’s blog about her daughter’s recent heartbreak. Fortunately, her daughter’s pain was temporary, but from what I could gather, Stephanie’s ache lingers. I am that mom. The mom who regularly thinks the grass is always greener in another mom’s yard. Only, after reading Stephanie’s post I was suddenly cured on … Continue reading

Cutest Book EVER!

Have you ever bore witness to something so incredibly cute that it made you… ovulate. I dare you to look at the unequivocally adorable illustrations that fill Charlie the Ranch Dog and not turn into a puddle of mush… or want to spawn, ASAP. I about died from the cuteness the first time I paged through the charming children’s book courtesy of HarperCollins. But then, when my 6-year-old daughter and I actually sat down to read Charlie the Ranch Dog, I discovered the story was as delightful as the pinch-your-cheek cute pictures. Continuing in our week-long series of super summer … Continue reading

Why You Shouldn’t Let Your Kids Sleep with Fido

My daughter didn’t get a dog for Christmas. Oh no she di-int! And it wasn’t because of the exorbitant cost of raising a pup. Okay, maybe money was a factor. A huge factor. But now I have another reason why I am glad my oldest isn’t cuddling with a pooch. According to a new report, sleeping with Fido or Fifi may increase your risk of contracting dangerous infections. In addition to an exposure to fleas, worms, ticks, and other parasites, the CDC just released a new study that found pet owners, who share their beds with their dogs or cats, … Continue reading

Why My Kid Won’t Be Getting a Dog for Christmas

Is it possible to be whined to death? If so, then I need to call my priest to administer Last Rites because I am dying a slow and agonizing death by persistently whiny six-year-old. My kid wants a dog for Christmas. Yes, like Linus and Lucy’s little brother Rerun, my daughter has major puppy envy. She has been lobbying for a Labrador for the past three years. To no avail. Given that she can’t even keep track of her winter gloves, I’m thinking we’ll hold off on having her take responsibility of walking, feeding and nurturing a living, breathing, potty … Continue reading

Another Mouth to Feed

My 6-year-old daughter has always dreamed of having a younger brother to boss around. Actually, what she really wants is a dog. A feisty yellow Lab puppy that will fetch anything and everything she throws his way. She wants a four-legged companion to “sit,” “heel,” “roll over” and “beg” on her command. She wants to be in control. She hungers to be the master of someone else’s destiny. She wants power! But what she got is a fish. After years of begging for a pup, a few weeks ago my pet-loving, power-hungry daughter settled for a fish. Charlie the fish … Continue reading

Does Your Daughter Like Dolls?

My young daughter owns a Barbie. A single sneaker clad Barbie that sits untouched in the corner of our family room. The reason the iconic doll is even in our home is that she came with a trio of peeing and pooping puppies. My 5-year-old doll-loathing daughter happens to love dogs and went gaga when she discovered that she could get her hands on a bunch of potty training pups. The only problem: In order to get a family of urinating dogs, my daughter would have to (gulp!) buy an actual (gasp!) Barbie (gag!) doll. Barbie’s Potty Training Pups are … Continue reading
