Where Might “Once Upon A Time” Be Headed?

We’re big fans of ABC’s “Once Upon A Time” around here on families.com. I’ve discussed the show before, and Mary Ann’s reviewed one of the latest episodes. The Disney-inspired drama recently took a short break for the holidays, but it’s going to be back with new episodes starting this coming Sunday, January 8. I’m not planning to review each episode as it comes along. But now that we’re about halfway through the season I think it will be interesting to take a moment to consider where the show has been, and where it might be going. Emma, the daughter of … Continue reading

Does Your Family Have Stories About Halloween?

Halloween is a time of year that brings back memories for some people. This is a great time of year to collect and record some really funny family stories. Ask your relatives what they dressed up as for Halloween when they were children. This is a good way to connect with living relatives, and to get a glimpse of what they were like as children. It is also a great way to get someone to tell you a story from their past. My family enjoys Halloween, and there are many family stories connected with Halloween that are fun to share. … Continue reading

Keeping Your Marriage License Safe

Let’s play a game. How many of you know exactly where your marriage license is at this exact moment? No, don’t raise your hands – I can’t see you! Just think about it. Is it framed and hanging on your wall? Behind a plastic page protector in your scrapbook, right across from that glamour shot of you in your bridal gown? Or did it get put in that one drawer where everything ends up when you aren’t sure where to put it? Yes, you do too have one of those drawers. Everyone does, and there’s no point in denying it. … Continue reading

Exercise Won’t Decrease Your Chances of Cesarean

Go ahead and exercise during your pregnancy, but don’t expect it to increase your chances of having your “dream birth.” That is one conclusion drawn from a recent research study by Dr. Ruben Barakat and his colleagues, at Universidad Politecnica de Madrid in Spain. The study followed 142 women for the second and third trimesters. Half of them followed a moderate exercise plan and the other half exercised very little or not at all. While the study confirmed the health benefits commonly associated with exercise during pregnancy, it did not confirm the previously held assumption that women who exercise are … Continue reading

Game Day Fun For Kids

The countdown to Super Bowl XLIV continues this weekend. We’ve been invited to a viewing party, but I know my 5-year-old will be bored to death, so we’re headed to a sledding party instead. However, not everyone has the same options we do. If you’re planning to cheer on your favorite team this weekend with a bunch of family and friends, don’t forget the kids. Younger children in particular may not share the same enthusiasm for sitting in front of a big screen TV watching grown men slam into each other while chasing a small ball. If young ones are … Continue reading

Do I Have To Play Games?

Recently I was at a baby shower and the women at my table got onto the topic of baby shower games. It became quite clear that while some guests enjoy the silly games at showers, some women absolutely despise them. Would you like to: *Guess which candy bar is melted in the diaper? *Mold a baby out of play-doh? *Draw a baby’s face on a paper plate (on your head)? *Unscramble fifty letters to make as many baby-related words as you can? *Guess the gestational period of various animals? *Taste unlabeled jars of baby food and guess what flavor they … Continue reading

Ways to Have Fun in the Sun with Your Toddler

Don’t let the calendar put a damper on your summer fun. Sure, there’s only a couple weeks left until Labor Day, but that doesn’t mean you have to head indoors right now. Instead, make the most of the gorgeous summer weather by partaking in educational games with your toddler outside. Here are a few to get you started: SAND DOUGH Take some Play-Doh outside and let your child have fun with it in the sand box. He’ll love feeling the texture of the dough once the sand has been incorporated into it. Use words to describe how it feels and … Continue reading

Dice Creatures – a Fun Drawing Game to Jumpstart Imaginations

Sometimes our imaginations seem stalled. Here’s an idea for jumpstarting creativity. All you need are a pair of dice, a mailing label or other blank sticker, and some drawing paper. Cut the mailing label into six small bits that can cover the sides of one of the dice. Before you put the labels on, write one of these words on each of the six tiny pieces of sticker: heads, tails, legs, eyes, horns/antennae, wings. Then put the worded label on each side of the die. (Die is the singular for the plural of dice, but it never does sound right.) … Continue reading

Divorce – The Dirty Game

Sadly, most people who has gone through a divorce probably know first-hand how dirty divorce can be. Sure, some people have civil and even friendly divorces but the majority is not so lucky. In addition to the husband and wife fighting over personal belongings, the house, the business, the kids, and even the pets, you get the divorce attorneys involved who also play power games as a means of gaining an unfair advantage. With most divorces, the attitude is to “win at all costs”. Unfortunately, the problem with this philosophy is that far too often, the kids become caught in … Continue reading

What Your First Grader Should Know: Science

The most important thing to teach in early science is observation. Teaching your kids to observe, and make notes of what they see is as important as getting the concepts. They can draw pictures of what they see, make notes or even take along a camera to take pictures and scrap book their observations. Encourage, as much as possible, your child to describe details in what they see. Animals My kids are simply fascinated with the Sea World website. Check out the Shamu cam, print coloring pages and look at activities. Or why not play some animal games on the … Continue reading
