This Saturday is Stamp Out Hunger Day

This Saturday, your letter carrier, i.e. mailperson, will pick up canned goods and non-perishable food items for the annual “Stamp Out Hunger” drive. The National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) has been doing this for 18 years now. This year, Campbell Soup Company is teaming up with them in what is the largest single-day food drive in the country. The letter carriers do this every May to help stock of the food pantries, which often run short of food during the summer. Despite hard times, the letter carriers collected 73.4 million pounds of food last year. The U.S. Department of … Continue reading

How Green was 2008

Many analysts predicted that 2008 was going to be a green year in terms of the home. More people would adopt materials and practices that saved energy and were good for the environment. My own New Year Resolutions for the beginning of the year included being more green in our home. But then we had a downturn in the economy. So did everyone live up to the expectations? Yes and no. Let me start with my own home. We live pretty frugally and normally try to avoid waste whenever possible by reusing items. We do recycle quite a bit and … Continue reading

Frugal Month in Review: November 2008

November to be is the beginning of two things. The holiday season starts with Thanksgiving, and then there is winter. Despite the fact that winter doesn’t officially start until next month, the fall seems to give way to the winter in November anyway. We had a day of snow already. Here is looking ahead to December and the end of the year! November 1st Frugal Month in Review: October 2008 “Delicious autumn! Catalog Gifts for Dogs and the People Who Love Them: What on Earth and Wireless

Much to Wayne’s chagrin, it’s that time of year when our mailbox comes under assault by relentless rounds of catalogs. I have to admit I do buy my fair share of things from them. But what I love most is curling up on the couch and perusing all the different wares. I never know what I might find! This year I’ve come across some neat things I’ve never seen before, as well as some favorites from years past. I thought I’d make a list of them to help me keep track of what I might want to gift to who … Continue reading

My Turn on Earth (1986-2008)

The original cast version of the legendary LDS stage play “My Turn on Earth” has just been released on DVD. We had the soundtrack for this play while I was growing up, and I knew the songs by heart, but it wasn’t until I was about ten that we found the video in some secluded corner of a rental store. We watched it, I loved it, and I haven’t seen it since until the other day, when my mom came back from a trip to Deseret Book with the DVD in her hand. The film was made in 1986 in … Continue reading

Wall-E (2008)

Let me begin this review with a very simple, yet profound reaction to Disney/Pixar’s latest venture ‘Wall-E’. Wow. We sat down to watch it early Friday morning, the very first showing. The daughter was settled comfortably between us and the theater was pretty packed by the time the previews began to air. I’ll admit, I had some reservations about Wall-E from the first time I wrote about it right up until the moment the first flicker of film filled the screen. Boy am I happy to say how wrong I got it. The Story Wall-E is a trash compacting robot. … Continue reading

Where to Spend World Ocean Day

Can you really think of a better place to spend World Ocean Day than in one of the most incredibly beautiful places on earth, which just happens to be set smack in the middle of the Pacific Ocean? I’m talking about Hawaii and if I hadn’t used up my vacation time to travel there a couple of months ago I certainly wouldn’t hesitate to head back on June 8th. On World Ocean Day the Maui Ocean Center will pay tribute to our watery resources with fun-filled activities for the entire family. The center is hosting an OceanFest from June 6-13, … Continue reading

Dinner Discussions 2008 Week 16

This week’s discussions are based on lesson sixteen in the manuals for all members twelve and older. The Primary is a week behind in the lessons. You may need to adjust your lessons according to your ward’s current schedule. You may want to incorporate an aspect of preparedness into this week’s discussions as well. If you have a child who is nursery or Sunbeams he learned about keeping the Sabbath day holy. He learned about Heavenly Father taking a day of rest after creating the Earth. He also learned the story of manna and the Israelites. This illustrates the blessings … Continue reading

More “Green” Earth Day Travel Ideas

Apparently, it’s not enough for some lodgings to provide “green” guests with simple eco-friendly amenities such as organic cotton sheets and hybrid shuttles, now, just in time for Earth Day, an increasing number of hotels are offering environmentally correct menu options at their in-house restaurants as well. The on-site eateries are serving up organic and locally grown foods, much to the delight of tree hugging guests. For example, in celebration of Earth Day next week Tuesday, Blue on Blue, a poolside restaurant at the Avalon Hotel in Beverly Hills is offering guests a $55 prix fixe menu showcasing organic and … Continue reading
