Homemade Holiday Decorations for the Craft-Challenged

I am no Martha Stewart, but that doesn’t stop me from having fun tackling artsy holiday projects to display during this magical time of the year. Shortly after Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old and I took on a candy cane craft project we first saw hanging at a Ben Franklin store. Nearly three weeks later we are finally done putting together the seasonal showpiece. Okay, it didn’t really take us three full weeks to craft the minty, blinged out wreath. It just seems that way. Truth be told, you could easily construct the sweet masterpiece in a single afternoon. Here’s what you … Continue reading

Cute Crafts to Make with Leftover Halloween Candy

You know it’s time to dump your kid’s Halloween loot when you’re going on day three of eating Kit Kats for breakfast… ahem. I was this close to pitching my daughter’s trick-or-treat bag when our neighbor came over bearing more candy. However, instead of just handing us a half-eaten bag of chocolate, she presented us with a tray filled with edible butterflies and caterpillars made entirely of Hershey Kisses. If you are looking for an adorable craft idea that will put a major dent in your leftover Halloween candy pile, then consider making Hershey Kiss critters. They are a breeze … Continue reading

Handy Winter Projects for Kids

My 5-year-old is obsessed with handprint art. Ever since her kindergarten teacher showed her how to make a painted heart from two upside-down handprints, she’s gone ga-ga for metacarpus-inspired art projects. She’s already ripped through a mountain of construction paper and about a gallon of (not cheap) washable Crayola fingerpaint. Now our living room walls are covered with handprint everything from hedgehogs to horses. Currently, I’m trying to channel her enthusiasm for handprint paintings into something a bit more festive for the holiday season. After all, as long as she is motivated, we might as well knock out a few … Continue reading

Hop Aboard the Candy Train and Other Festive Crafts for Kids

Now that the kids are out on winter break your home is probably not as quiet (or clean) as it was a week ago. To regain some semblance of order you might consider emptying your craft closet and assembling the following kid-friendly holiday crafts. Not only will they help your children channel their energy into something worthwhile, but also your home will be filled with festive decorations. Note: Adult supervision is required on projects that involve hot glue. CHRISTMAS CANDY TRAIN Materials: Hot glue gun 1 unopened roll of hard candy (Lifesavers) 4 wrapped peppermint candies 1 wrapped caramel 1 … Continue reading

Simple and Affordable President’s Day Fun

Having your kids home from school on Presidents’ Day may not sound like a ton of fun for busy parents, but with a few holiday-themed projects to keep them busy, the third Monday in February can be an exciting time. Rather than use Lincoln Logs to build a replica of Abe’s cherished cabin, spice up the construction by using pretzels.  All you need is a paper plate, a small, empty milk carton, some vanilla frosting, a bunch of three-inch pretzel rods, some green gum drops, and a butter knife.  To make the edible cabin, spread generous amounts of the white … Continue reading

So Not My World

I barely have time to wash my hair in the morning, let alone shave my legs on a daily basis. So, how then is it possible for some moms to find time to post DIY tutorials featuring step-by-step instructions on how to create crocheted cozies for disposable Scotch Tape dispensers on YouTube? Pretty, little, intricately handcrafted covers for 99-cent tape dispensers that are designed to be THROWN AWAY. The tape dispensers that is. Clearly, you want to reuse the cuddly soft cozy you created to warm the cold plastic covering and disguise the unsightly green tartan plaid insert of any … Continue reading

Sweet Easter Fun

Smell that? It’s the sweet scent of Easter. Or, in our house, chocolate and jelly beans. Spring break has given my daughter plenty of time to exercise her creative muscle designing and decorating Easter-themed goodies. The following projects are two of her favorites, though only one is edible: CANDY FLOWERS Materials: Construction paper or cardstock in a variety of colors 8-ounce clear plastic cups Popsicle sticks or craft sticks One bag of jelly beans One bag of Hershey Kisses One bag of Rolos One bag of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup Minis Craft glue Directions: Use construction paper to cut-out flower … Continue reading

Getting Into the Christmas Spirit

Now that Thanksgiving is over and Advent has officially begun, my family is really getting into the Christmas spirit. It also helps that we put up our tree yesterday. Fa-la-la-la-la and ho, ho, ho! It’s off to create memorable holiday scrapbooks I go. Every year I swear that I am going to be more organized when it comes to collecting material for my Christmas scrapbook. I’m tired of creating the same, boring timeline of events: buying the tree, decorating it, baking cookies, listing presents everyone received, blah, blah, blah. It seems all of my layouts blur into one. They all … Continue reading

Thanksgiving Fun in the Kitchen

One my family’s favorite holiday traditions is making at least two or three kid-friendly recipes and allowing the youngest members of the clan to create edible masterpieces with help from mom, dad, grandma or grandpa. Each year my mom, my sister-in-law and I comb through our recipe boxes to find simple yet tasty treats the kids can make with little assistance. I always make sure that we choose at least one dessert and one main or side dish, so they can feel as though they contributed to different aspects of the meal. This year I settled on the following recipes: … Continue reading

Kid-Friendly No-Cook Turkey

It’s the ultimate edible Thanksgiving craft and the perfect boredom buster for kids who tire of making handprint turkeys and construction paper cornucopias. This veggie and cheese turkey can be made up to 48 hours in advance of serving. It requires quite a bit of prep work and the assembly takes a while too, but it’s easy stuff that kids can help out with. Cheese Ball (Base of Turkey) Ingredients: 8 ounces cream cheese, softened 3 one-ounce packages dry Hidden Valley Ranch salad dressing mix 3 cups shredded cheese 4 three-ounce packages of real bacon bits or cooked crumbled bacon … Continue reading
