Experimenting with Ice Cream Sandwichesby Lauri Griffin | More from this Blogger 18 Jul 2008 07:58 AM Valorie's blog on Homemade Ice Cream Sandwiches made me remember a fun ice cream place from my college days. It was called Serendipity. To get there you had to go down a tiny staircase. The store was actually below sidewalk level. And since serendipity means an accidental discovery of something pleasant, valuable, or useful, I thought the name of this tiny little ice cream store fit perfectly. They sold all kinds of ice cream, but my favorite was their design- it -yourself ice cream sandwiches. First you picked from chocolate, sugar, oatmeal, or chocolate chip cookies. These were large fresh-baked cookies. And then you could pair the cookies with any kind of ice cream. They would take a scoop of ice cream, place it between the cookies, squish it down a bit, and hand it over. When I introduced my kids to this idea, they wanted to make everything! They had great ideas for flavor combinations. I explained that it would have to be an ongoing experiment for the best flavors, depending on what cookies and ice cream we had at the time. If I were planning a party right now though, I think it would be fun to put out a large selection of cookies and ice cream flavors for experimenting. Softer cookies are easier to use. It's hard to bite through two layers of hard cookies and ice cream. I also think I'd stick to smaller cookies, so that the inventors could sample a few. I haven't actually tried this for a party, but I can't imagine that it wouldn't go over well. Even small children could make these. And if you wanted to get really fancy you could have nuts and sprinkles ready to roll the sides of the sandwich in, like Valorie suggested in her blog. As for us, we'll keep experimenting. With so many fun flavors of ice cream on the market now, this could take us a while...
