Fall Art Projects for Kids

Now that you know where to collect colorful fall leaves, it's time to figure out what to do with them.

The following art projects are simple enough for the whole family to partake in. What's more, your kids will be filled with pride knowing that their leaf collections are being put to good use.

LEAF IMPRESSIONS

Materials:

White paper

Construction paper

Crayons

White craft glue

Scissors

Fall leaves in a variety of colors

Directions:

Place a leaf down flat on a table. Then, place a piece of white paper over it.

Use a crayon to color over the leaf. (You can use one color if you like or multiple.)

When the picture resembles a leaf, stop coloring.

Glue your leaf impression on a piece of construction paper and display on a wall.

FALL LEAF PLACEMATS

Have your children collect fall leaves in different shapes, sizes and colors.

Flatten each leaf in a thick book.

For each placemat cut two rectangles (about 16 by 12 inches) from clear contact paper.

Peel the back from one sheet and place it on a table, sticky side up.

Arrange leaves in a pleasing pattern on the paper and press them down firmly.

Next, add construction paper shapes, sequins, glitter, stickers or other embellishments.

Peel the back off of the other piece of contact paper and place it on top of the decorated sheet, so that the two pieces stick together.

Press firmly, flip over and admire your work of art.

Use the placemats during your fall meals.

LEAF MATCH GAME

Have your children hunt for pairs of leaves. Find two each of various fall leaves from maple, birch, oak or tamarack trees.

Cut out squares from construction paper or cereal boxes and glue one leaf on each paper square.

If you want you could cover each leaf square with clear contact paper.

To play the game spread out one set of leaf cards, face up on a table. Place the second set of cards in a pile. Then, turn over a card and place it on the matching leaf.

During the game discuss the various leaves with your children. Taking points include: leaf types, sizes, shapes and colors.
