Family Fun: Autumn Festivals

If you love bonding with your family in the great outdoors, but loathe dealing with freezing temperatures, ice and snow, then now is the time to take advantage of local festivals.

Crafts, culture, food and fun await you and your family at the following popular autumn festivals:

Montgomery County, Pennsylvania is hosting the 10th Annual Scottish-Irish Festival, September 11-13, with singers, dancers, bagpipers, food, crafts, games and more.

On September 19th German heritage will be celebrated in Norristown, Pennsylvania, at Elmwood Park Zoo's Oktoberfest, featuring seasonal crafts, ethnic food, and live music.

Founder's Day Fall Festival at Washington Memorial Chapel in Valley Forge National Historical Park takes place on September 26th. Colonial music, storytelling, crafts, games and a dog show are on tap at the family-friendly festival this year.

Mansfield and Frederickstown, Ohio, will host a bevy of autumn festivals next month. On October 11th the Mansfield orchard will sponsor its annual Kids Day complete with games, food and lessons on Amish living. In addition, kids can take advantage of free hayrides and apple and pumpkin picking.

Children can also have a fall ball in Jordan, Minnesota. That's where you'll find Minnesota Harvest, a massive apple orchard featuring more than 53 varieties of apples. In addition to the apple picking, kids can take guided horseback rides through the woods surrounding the orchard. Meanwhile, mom and dad can fill up on apple turnovers, mini apple strudel, apple bread, fritters and dumplings at the orchard's old-style bakery, which makes its on Caramel Apple Topper.

On October 3rd, Pennypacker Mills, in Schwenksville, Pennsylvania, hosts an event called "Haunted Stories by the Bonfire." Pennypacker also hosts an All Hallow's Eve Fall Festival October 17th.

Also, in Pennsylvania, Willow Creek Orchards in Collegeville, has pick-your-own vegetables and pumpkins from now through the first weekend in November. Meanwhile, Freddy Hill Farms, in Lansdale, hosts activities every weekend in October including pig races, pony rides, a farm zoo, funnel cake and more.
