Favorite Family Restaurant Deals

Family-friendly and affordable should go hand in hand when it comes to restaurants, but that is not always the case. Anyone who has ever blinked twice at the cost of a plate of chicken nuggets would agree. Before you spend your family budget on eating out with the kids, check out the following favorite family restaurant deals. 1. Ruby’s Diner Ruby’s Diner offers several menu choices for kids for a reasonable price, and each kids’ meal includes a small ice cream cone for desert. Steer clean of the macaroni and cheese, which comes out of a box, and instead choose … Continue reading

Family Road Trip Part 1

It is finally time for my family to take the trip that we have been anticipating for quite a few months, now. This is the first time that we have taken Dylan on a car trip that is longer than six hours. As of right now, we are a little over half way to our destination. The trip from Vermont to Florida is a long one, and it can take anywhere from twenty four hours on upwards, depending upon how many stops are made. We began our journey a little over twenty four hours ago. The first small portion of … Continue reading

Settling In To Our New Family Arrangement

A few weeks ago, I wrote about how Dylan was going through some tough adjustments as he became a big brother. Now that Blake is almost seven weeks old, we have all had a chance to get used to the way our family is now and things are settling down a bit. I am proud of how far Dylan has come in the past few weeks as far as understanding and working through his feelings about the experience. One thing that I am very happy about is that he no longer thinks that I am going to go away and … Continue reading

Happy Kids On The Cheap

With all of the expenses of raising a family, parents are often searching for ways to save money wherever they can. One area of the family budget where spending can often be reduced quite a bit is entertainment. Parents often believe that they need to spend more money to keep their children entertained and occupied than they actually do. Children are naturally curious, and often parents are pleasantly surprised by how simple things can capture their imaginations and hold their attention for hours. My favorite example of low or no cost family fun is a trip to the playground. Depending … Continue reading

Happy Father’s Day

Mother’s Day and Father’s Day, days full of expectations. Breakfast in bed, well behaved children, getting to watch something you would like to watch on TV, being pampered and catered to. Then we wake up. As cute as our kids are and as much as they try to be angels for our special day, they are kids, and ten minutes after being the most adorable, thoughtful child on the planet, they do something that makes you wonder if you are going to live through parenting them. Single fathers are not a new breed but their numbers are growing and we … Continue reading

The Week We Became a Family

Our week started and we were just a couple in the process to adopt. On Wednesday we found out we were going to be parents of two small boys a fourteen month old and his three year old brother. On Friday we drove to Houston from Dallas to meet our sons the very next day. Wait it gets better, we met them for a few hours at the babies foster home then the fourteen month old came to spend the night with us that Saturday night. On Sunday we had to bring him back to his foster family so they … Continue reading

Set Your Own Hours, Set Yourself Free

When you work from home, you are able to set your own hours and work at whatever time of day suits you. Of course, there are certain things that you must do during “normal business hours” between nine and five, Monday through Friday. Things like going to the bank and the post office, and making phone calls to other businesses that operate only during those hours are just a few of the things that you may have to make time for during the day if you normally do most of your work at night. Choosing your own hours of operation … Continue reading

Don’t Miss Out on Starbucks Happy Hour!

There is just something about warm weather that makes people long for ice cream, and cold drinks. Starbucks has the perfect mix of the two in their frappuccinos. They will customize your drink and make it however you want it. You can get your frapp for half price if you go to Starbucks during their Happy Hour. When you hear the words “Happy Hour” it tends to evoke images of dimly lit bars, and glasses or bottles of cold beer. There may, or may not, be plates of pub food included in this imagining. When Starbucks has a Happy Hour, … Continue reading

Counting Down to Earth Hour

Eight o’clock sharp is lights out at our home, though this Saturday we may be pushing bedtime back about 30 minutes. My six-year-old will probably sleep through Earth Hour, but it certainly won’t go unnoticed by others in our home. There’s nothing quite like spending Saturday night in the dark in order to support the fight against climate change. For the fourth year in a row, large chunks of the world’s population will power down their tech-heavy lives to celebrate Earth Hour. For 60 minutes beginning at 8:30 p.m. local time the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) is asking that we … Continue reading

Happy “Genealogy Saturday”!

Celebrate Your Name Week finishes today, with “Genealogy Saturday”. This is a day dedicated to genealogy, and an excellent excuse to spend the day working on your genealogy research. After spending the week learning more about your name, and the names of your ancestors, today is an opportunity to put it all together. Celebrate Your Name Week (CYNW) took place this year, starting on Sunday, March 6, and ending today, Saturday, March 12, 2011. It was founded by Jerry Hill, who wanted a week where people celebrate their name, their middle name, and even the names of other people. If … Continue reading
