Family Project: Address Plaque

by Sherry Holetzky | More from this Blogger

You can use craft wood or even scrap wood for this project. You might even want to use aluminum or Plexiglas since it's going to be outside. You should be able to pick up a small piece of either, or have a piece cut down to size, at a hardware store or sign shop in your area.

Actually, a coated aluminum license plate blank works perfectly. If your state is one that requires license plates on both front and back of vehicles, they might not be as easy to find locally, but you can order them online. They are 6" high by 12" wide, which is a perfect size. They're rigid, enamel coated, and usually have pre-punched holes top and bottom, so they're easy to hang. They're affordable as well.

Whichever material you choose to use, you and your families can make a great, custom address, or name and address, sign for the exterior of your home. If anyone in your family is particularly artistic, consider having that person paint a small mural for the background. If you don't want to do the mural, have everyone vote on a color scheme, starting with the background color.

Adding a border to a sign is always a good idea as well. It's like framing a picture, and gives it a much more finished look. Just tape off a section around the edges, probably about 1" wide, and paint it a contrasting color.

Address plaquesUse stencils, pre-cut wooden letters, pre-cut vinyl lettering, to add your last name and house numbers to the sign. Alternatively, try a little freehand painting, making sure the numbers are large enough to be read clearly.

Another fun idea is to have a contest. Have each family member draw up a sketch for the address plaque. Take a secret vote. Whichever design receives the most votes, is the one used.
