Spreading Smucker’s Traditions Recipe and Essay Contest,

The J.M. Smucker company which has been operating for 110 years never fails to offer fine tasting jams and jellies which make the family breakfast table a bit cozier. Smucker’s jams and jellies are also a healthier alternative to cream cheese or butter. Try some of your favorite fruit spread on an English muffin and you will gladly say goodbye to the high fat bagel and cream cheese habit. Unless, of course, you use fat free cream cheese and decide to add a dollop of Smucker’s fruit spread for a deluxe breakfast treat. Adding jams and jellies for sweetness instead … Continue reading

Recipes for Leftover Easter Chocolate

After a quick search on Google I’ve come to the conclusion that the words “leftover” and “chocolate” are rarely used in the same sentence. I suppose after the collective sugar coma most of us endured on Easter; there wouldn’t be so much as a tip of a chocolate bunny’s ear left amongst the plastic grass and broken eggs. Then again, my family rarely follows conventional wisdom. Despite the sugar fest that took place here last week, we still had a basket full of chocolate sitting on the kitchen counter. The leftover chocolate taunted me for days, and a few hours … Continue reading

Autumn Recipes: U is for Udon

She may not know how to spell the word “delicious,” but my 4-year-old can differentiate between an udon noodle and a spaghetti noodle quicker than most adults. In fact, udon (pronounced oo-DOHN) was one of the first words my daughter learned how to say after spending time in Hawaii with my grandma. Udon is a thick, round Japanese noodle typically made with wheat flour and served in cold dishes (salads or chilled with soy sauce and topped with sesame seeds) during the summer months and in hot dishes (soups and broth) during the fall and winter. I grew up eating … Continue reading

Family Words and Special Recipes

Does your family have different words for food? It’s fun to think them up, or just notice those words when they happen naturally, and to record them all. My oldest used to call swiss cheese “hole cheese”. For years I even wrote “hole cheese” on the grocery list. We call the homemade version of a chain restaurant’s teriyaki burger “messy burgers” because between the pineapple and teriyaki sauce and tomato slice – they really are extra messy. My kids love to eat those multi-colored pasta shapes with a little olive oil and grated cheese. They call them “wild oats” noodles … Continue reading

Crazy About Cards

Forget about Halloween, or even Thanksgiving, right now, retailers are all about Christmas. My email inbox is being choked by hundreds of solicitations for holiday greeting cards. I got one note which suggested that if I didn’t select my card choice by the end of the month friends and family wouldn’t receive my greeting in time for the celebration of Jesus’ birth. Really. To be perfectly honest, I am considering not sending greeting cards this year. However, I think about how much I enjoy receiving holiday well wishes from others, and I am guilted into sending overpriced cards to everyone … Continue reading

Genealogy for Kids

I want my children to share my passion for genealogy, and I try to share my research with them whenever I think I may have grabbed their attention. My three-year-old son accompanies me on most of my cemetery visits, and actually gets excited when I ask him if he wants to go for a walk in the cemetery. My nine-year-old daughter enjoys looking through my old family photos with me. I am always looking for ways to involve my children in my genealogy, and often come up short when looking for ideas online. However, I have managed to come across … Continue reading

Parents Don’t Know What They’re Doing

You’ll have to forgive my tongue and cheek title, but a recent study has discovered that 1 out of every 3 parents has little or very poor knowledge of their baby’s development and researchers believe that this is hurting parent/child relationships. The questionnaire asked parents questions about child development, what babies should and shouldn’t be able to do at various ages and whether or not they should help their babies achieve these milestones or whether they happen on their own. They coupled the survey with observation of various family units and watched parents teach their child a new skill. They … Continue reading

Holy Huddles or Reaching Outwards

Are we in danger of creating holy huddles? It appears we are. In Australia it was revealed in our latest monthly church newsletter that 60% of those who do not attend church have, ‘no close friends involved in a church.’ That is a staggering statistic and one that needs to be changed. In an effort to change this situation and try and connect with these people currently outside the church, the Anglican Synod has started an evangelistic plan called Connect 09. It’s great there is a plan set up to get the Word of God out to more people, and … Continue reading
