First Fourth of July Part II

This is something that I have observed about my daughter: she is very interested in every aspect of her five senses. When it comes to smelling things, she is anxious to get a good pondering whiff of the wonderful smells around her. The array of fourth of July fare was not any different and she even insisted on being held during our meal without wanting to nurse (which never happens). She watched everyone at the table taking bites of foods with this look of anticipation on her face. Needless to say she was very excited about the food even though … Continue reading

More Fourth of July Fun Without Fireworks

Colorado is burning. So is Utah and parts of Arizona. Some of the nation’s most destructive wildfires are putting a damper on Fourth of July festivities from coast-to-coast. Due to extremely hot and dry conditions, and the fear that other areas may go up in flames like Colorado and Utah, officials have banned the use of fireworks during Independence Day celebrations in nearly every state. If you live in an area where kids are not even allowed to light-up sparklers to commemorate the United States’ birthday, then infuse your Fourth of July parties with these fun activities that don’t include … Continue reading

Fourth of July Fun Without Fireworks

The scorching heat continues across the country, including here in the Midwest. In fact, our county has experienced such hot, humid and dry conditions the past few months that officials have banned fireworks. Yes, a fireworks ban leading up to and including the Fourth of July. Since we don’t want to end up like the poor folks in Colorado, who have lost so much due to a rash of destructive wildfires, we’re planning a festive Fourth minus the sparklers and other colorful explosives. Rather than celebrating Independence Day by lighting up, we’re planning a slew of kid-friendly outdoor activities, such … Continue reading

Playing with Fire on the 4th of July

We are decidedly not fireworks people. I have never set fire to anything more grandiose than a sparkler on the 4th of July. I do, however, take pleasure in viewing firework displays – both the amateur local and impressive, highly structured professional varieties – and do so from a far. This holiday, our gal is really enjoying the mini-light shows some folks in the neighborhood have been putting on during the evenings leading up to America’s birthday. We will sit out on the driveway with some milk and cookies and look skyward for the glittering flashes of red, white and … Continue reading

Independence Day Sparkle

It’s going to be a sparkler-less Fourth of July in our neck of the woods. Thanks to triple-digit temperatures and extremely dry conditions, city officials have banned all fireworks, including my 7-year-old’s favorite sparklers. From what I gather by watching the news, similar scenarios are playing out throughout the United States. It’s simply too dangerous to let every Joe Blow and his pyro cousins set-off fireworks when the fire risk is dangerously high. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to celebrate America’s birthday without having to light colorful explosives. Check out these fun-filled, kid-friendly activities that will add some sparkle … Continue reading

Light It Up

(My daughter rockin’ her sparkler!) We’re not really the blow-things-up-for-the-heck-of-it type family. Well, I suppose I should speak for myself… and my dad. While the rest of the guys in my family are beyond thrilled whenever they get the opportunity to legally detonate explosives from the comfort of their own backyard, my dear ol’ dad refuses to revel in the merriment that is 4th of July fireworks fun. Blame it on the fact that one of his best friends lost part of his hand thanks to a bottle rocket. Or, just chock it up to parental paranoia. Regardless of the … Continue reading
