Fun Earth Day Projectsby Michele Cheplic | More from this Blogger 19 Apr 2009 06:07 PM There are tons of other fun activities to partake in on Earth Day besides planting a tree. Take a look at these kid-friendly art projects that are ideal to commemorate Earth Day 2009: LADY BUG ROCKS Materials: Smooth, round or oval rocks, washed and dried Craft paint in colors of our choice Black craft paint 2 googly eyes for each ladybug Black Sharpie Acrylic matte sealer spray White craft glue Directions: Wash and dry all rocks. Paint rocks in desired colors, allow to dry. Apply second and third coats if needed. Lighter colors will require more coats than darker shades. Paint head on using black paint. Use a black Sharpie to draw a straight line down the center of the rock, starting at the center of the base of the "head". Dip the end of a large paintbrush, or the eraser of a pencil, in black craft paint. Apply black spots on rocks. Once the paint is dry, spray the rock(s) with acrylic sealer spray. Allow sealer to dry completely. Using white craft glue, attach googly eyes and let dry. Use ladybugs as decorations or paperweights. ANIMAL JAR PALS Materials: Clean, empty glass jars Felt, in a variety of colors Pompoms Scissors White craft glue Googly eyes Directions: Remove lids from jars and paint with a layer of Gesso. Let dry. Line the top of the lid with glue. Pipe glue around the outside rim as well. Place lid, glue side down, onto a piece of felt. Wrap felt around lid and rim and hold snugly so glue can adhere. Repeat if necessary. Trim the excess felt around the edge of the rim. Fill the jar with toys, coins, buttons, etc. Return the felted lid to the jar. Cut additional animal pieces (ears, spots, trunks) from felt to create animal faces. Use contrasting colors for designs. Glue on pieces. If making a cat or dog, cut out long thin strips of felt for the whiskers and glue them on top of the cheeks. Glue pompoms for noses. Allow to dry before using jars.
