The end of leaf-peeping season is in sight for most families. However, just because the fiery displays of fall foliage are disappearing doesn't mean you should start hibernating yet. There are a myriad of outdoor adventures waiting for you and your family during these last weeks of fall and several of them feature kid-friendly companions--animals.

Take a look:

New Mexico

In Taos, New Mexico you and your family can hook up with a group of lovable llamas as you tour the surrounding countryside. The llamas-for-hire come courtesy of Wild Earth Llama Adventures, which pairs each family member with a gear-carrying llama for a trek through a nearby forest. You'll also have the expertise of a naturalist guide and plenty of snacks for everyone as you navigate the leafy terrain.

Wyoming

Late autumn is the perfect time to saddle up and explore Wyoming's stunning wilderness. Local wranglers offer a variety of guided horseback riding trips that last anywhere from an hour to several days out on the trails. In addition to soaking up the sights of changing aspens and cottonwoods, you'll also be treated to views of moose, elk, and the occasional bear.

Pennsylvania

When the mercury starts to dip herds of majestic American elk emerge in northwest Pennsylvania. You can see bulls strut their stuff during the rut by taking a drive on state Route 555, where hundreds of elk converge as they search for mates. According to local naturalists, elk were first reintroduced in Pennsylvania in 1913 and have thrived ever since. The herd now numbers about 800, and live primarily in Elk and Cameron counties, anchored by the town of Benezette along Route 555 where safe public viewing areas are plentiful.

Colorado

A family trip to Colorado this time of year yields prime viewing of Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep along the Interstate 70 corridor. The Georgetown and Mount Evans areas are two noted spots for sheep viewing. In fact, this weekend Georgetown is hosting the Bighorn Sheep Festival. The event includes family-friendly activities such as guided hikes to view one of the state's oldest herds and hands-on seminars for kids.
