Stickers

My toddler has discovered stickers. Stickers aren’t new to Jessie, but she’s finally discovered the joy and pleasure that stickers bring. People have been giving Jessie stickers as long as I can remember, but Jessie didn’t care. Jessie would even give them back or just tell the giver no. Now she’ll ask for a sticker. She’ll ask for sticker from people she’s never gotten a sticker from before. She’ll ask for a sticker from people who have no logical reason to give Jessie a sticker. Jessie is all about the sticker now. I don’t know when the change started. The … Continue reading

Fun Ways to Add Love to Lunch Boxes

This is my daughter’s first year eating lunch at school. Needless to say it has been a major adjustment for both of us, namely because she thinks I am a short order cook and doesn’t understand why I am not willing to fill her lunch box with freshly baked pizza, ice-cold fruit salad and undisturbed seven-layer chocolate cake on a daily basis… in a single insulated Toy Story 3 lunch box. There’s no way I can fulfill her lunch fantasy every day, but I can show her how much I love and miss her by adding simple surprises in her … Continue reading

What’s in your child’s lunchbox?

The biggest influence on how our children eat is you, the parent. That influence does not end with a packed lunch. We still need to be vigilant to provide healthy options even when processed, sugary, prepackaged foods are so much easier to pack. The 100 calorie cookie packs look to be a nice idea but they are loaded with sugar. Peanut butter and jelly is always a hit but jelly is packed with high fructose sugar. What kid doesn’t love the crunch of a bag of potato chips? Yet, chips contain high amounts of fat. How about a nice turkey … Continue reading

10 Quick and Fun Summer Ideas

My summer is just whooshing by. I’ve heard from other mothers that they feel the same way, so I thought I’d try to think of some extremely quick and easy ways to celebrate summer. 1. Slice up a watermelon for an afternoon snack or dessert. Have some wet wipes or paper towels handy. 2. Have a water gun fight. If you don’t have water guns, scoops of water out of a bucket or kiddie pool work too. 3. Buy a box of fancy popsicles, they come in sorts of fun flavors and varieties now. 4. Get some lovely fresh and … Continue reading

A Few Tightwad Tips for Road Trips

It’s spring break season. A time when most people are planning (or dreaming about) taking a family vacation somewhere warm and sunny. Not me, I am packing up two preschoolers and heading north to visit my family and friends in Minnesota. I consider myself to be a professional family road-tripper. I take this fourteen hour jaunt every two or three months. (That’s one benefit of working from home – I can pack up and head home whenever I feel like it). That being said, traveling is expensive. As I am watching the gas prices rise almost daily, I’ve been thinking … Continue reading

Squeezing $150.00 From Nowhere Fast!

A few days ago I posted a blog about how I wanted to go to a workshop, but it cost $150.00 and I didn’t have it budgeted. I asked for ideas on finding quick cash and I got some great ones. ( I also wrote about collecting change in My Secret Stash of Fun Money ) I’ve got little coin jars … Continue reading
