Fun Ways to Get Kids Excited About Writing

I don't have to cajole my daughter into writing anything. At 4 years old she is only too happy to print her favorite words on everything from construction paper to paper towels. However, if you have a child who would rather pick up the TV remote than a pencil, then this craft is for you.

Writing is a lot more fun when you have a fuzzy friend keeping you company. The following project yields an adorable pencil pal made of chenille. This particular craft makes a perfectly pudgy pig to connect to the end of your child's writing tool, but you could just as easily make a mouse, cat, dog, cow or penguin simply by using different color pieces of chenille.

PIG PENCIL PAL

Materials:

Long piece of pink chenille

Small googly eyes

Small pink button

Satin pink ribbon

Pencil

Craft glue

Directions:

Curl chenille into a spiral form until there is about 3-4 inches of chenille is left.

On the last round, pinch 2 ears and bring the rest of the chenille around the side of the face. Cut any remaining chenille away.

Using the remaining small piece of chenille, form a small round spiral piece for the snout.

Lay pig's head down on flat surface.

Draw a line of glue down the middle, starting at the top of the head and lay the pencil over the glue.

Allow glue to dry thoroughly and then turn over pig's head.

Glue on snout and then glue button on it.

Glue on eyes.

When glue is dry tie a ribbon around the pencil and your pal is ready to write.

Tip: This craft also makes for great party favors or as a project at a child's birthday bash. Simply place a variety of different color chenille out for kids to pick from and have them shape pieces into their favorite animals.
