Fun with Flowers

Spring isn't exactly close to springing where I live. In fact, we're currently under a winter storm watch. Meteorologists say up to 10 inches of snow is headed our way in the next 24 hours. Needless to say, I miss Hawaii more than ever--the warm sun, the beach, and most of all... the amazing flowers.

Several U.S. cities help residents deal with the winter blues by hosting spectacular flower shows. Unfortunately, I don't live near any of them, but you might. If you are looking to take a break from the bitter cold, ice and snow, consider checking out one these fabulous floral festivals:

NEW YORK

The New York Botanical Garden in the Bronx is hosting its seventh annual orchid show, from February 28-April 12. This year the show features a contemporary Brazilian garden design with fountains, pools, mosaics and palms. "The Orchid Show: Brazilian Modern" is open Tuesday-Sunday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m.; admission, $20.

ST. LOUIS

The Missouri Botanical Garden in St. Louis is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Of those 150 years in business it has hosted 91 orchid shows. This year's orchid extravaganza is called "Henry's Garden," in honor of Henry Shaw, who founded the garden in 1959. The exhibit runs through March 15th and features more than 800 orchids with a Victorian theme, including a three-tiered fountain, large planters brimming with flowers, wrought-iron lamp posts, urns and other period pieces, which would have been featured in a 19th century courtyard.

MIAMI

The South Florida Orchid Society is hosting the 63rd Miami International Orchid Show again this year. It is the largest exhibiting orchid show in the country and it is expected to draw a record crowd this year. The show runs from Feb. 27-March 1 and features a theme of "Secret Orchid Gardens" at the Doubletree Miami Mart/Airport Hotel and Exhibition Center. The program includes a juried awards competition, daily demonstrations by orchid experts, and sales of thousands of orchids and floral items.
