What on earth is a hugelkultur?

I admit, I had to Google the word hugelkultur to figure out how to spell it. While I’m been saying it all spring, the spelling of this German word was a little difficult to figure out! However, hugelkultur itself is not at all difficult to figure out. If you’re out in the garden and you’re left with a whole mess of sticks, grass clippings, and leaves, you too can create a hugelkultur. Plus, you can have the fun of saying it over and over again! Many of you may have heard the term Lasagne Gardening, or the less fun-sounding term … Continue reading

Man Uses Google Earth to Find Long Lost Family

Genealogy research is connecting, more and more, with modern technology. You probably use an online website to do your research from, instead of traveling to a courthouse archive to do it. That’s just one example. A man in India used Google Earth to find his long, lost, family. Have you ever used Google to help with your genealogy research? Some genealogists have. Type the name of your ancestor into the Google search engine. Perhaps some helpful information will come up. If nothing good comes up, you can try different combinations of keywords. Try your ancestor’s first name and surname. Next, … Continue reading

Mommy Blog Bashers

Have you ever considered that you could be helping a struggling single mom of four young children make ends meet each time you click on a link that leads to her blog? Earlier this year Oprah Winfrey devoted an entire show to the “Secret Lives of Moms.” It featured an audience full of women drooling at the chance to discuss the joys and pitfalls associated with raising the next generation. A portion of the episode spoke to a “new” kind of motherhood, in which women no longer suffer in silence about negative parenting experiences, mistakes and lack of maternal instincts. … Continue reading

Tonight, March 29, 2008 is the second annual Earth Hour, sponsored by the World Wildlife Fund. The idea behind this hour is to raise awareness of steps we can all do to fight climate change. It’s an international event. The idea is simple, turn off your lights at 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. your local time. Turn off those computers. You can leave on security lights, the fridge and the heat! Millions of people around the globe are participating. If you go to do a Google search today, you’ll see even they have “turned off the lights”. This hour is … Continue reading

Google Earth and the Universe – Space Travel Fun

A few months ago, Jeff talked about Google Earth and how much fun it was to explore the program in one of his blogs. Now, with their latest version, Google Earth has gone into space. Now, not only can you type in San Francisco, you can type in Andromeda, Horsehead Nebula, or Orion. Google and NASA have compiled over a million Hubble Space Telescope and satellite images into a map of space. The project is mind boggling. And so is traveling through the universe! It’s so fun! You can type in an address and view the night sky from that … Continue reading

Google 411

If you’re as old as I am, you can probably remember calling “Information.” It was a friendlier phone company then. No “What city, please?” said in a disinterested voice. It was INFORMATION. Before computers were commonplace in homes, there was the information lady. 411. “Do you know the capital of Missouri?” “What time is it?” “Can you tell me how to call another country?” These were real information operators – not simply people who typed in a request to a number database. And they were free. Now it costs me $1.25 in my area to find my neighbor’s misplaced phone … Continue reading

Earth Day Activities for Families

Earth Day began on April 22, 1970 as a way of promoting information about our environment. I’ve never known a child who wasn’t fascinated with our natural world, with animals, bugs, and flowers. They love to help with recycling, and saving the animals. Many communities hold Earth Day fairs where people can learn more about recycling and reducing their impact on their planet. You can learn how to save water and electricity, and money! Other communities host things like park or river clean up on Earth Day weekend. Here are some more ideas for celebrating Earth Day in your own … Continue reading
