Staying Healthy During the Holidays

Tis the season, for coughing, sneezing, runny noses, tummy aches and any other kind of germ your kids can drag home. It’s no fun to be sick for the holidays but in my house it seems like someone always is. Maybe it’s because we are spending more time in crowded shopping centers and malls, maybe it’s because we are exposed to more germs at all the holiday parties we attend or maybe germs just like us better during the holidays. Whatever the reason, we need to do what we can to fend off illness so everyone can enjoy the holidays. … Continue reading

Fall Fun with Apples

Tis the season for apple overload. My family went bananas at a local u-pick apple orchard last month. We hauled home more than 20 pounds of the healthy fruit and still have more than a dozen individual apples left. They won’t be good for much longer, which is why I have been desperately looking for ways (besides making yet another pie) to make the most of the shiny orbs. Fortunately, there is no shortage of ideas floating around cyberspace. I tested a few of the more unique options from Women’s Day and several other reputable sites, then narrowed down my … Continue reading

I am very excited to bring to you this wonderful game! As a homeschooling mom, a lover of grammar and words, and an all around crazy gal, I have to say this game is now one of my favorites! It’s challenging, hilarious, and almost too much fun! I have to tell you that finding a family game that everyone loves and keeps your brain working is hard to find. This game encourages a healthy dose of brain training along with pure family fun. Let’s get to the basics. The game is designed for ages 8 and up. You will need … Continue reading

Ways it Get Children Involved in Nutrition

To get your child involved in nutrition and a healthy lifestyle it needs to be relevant to their lives and made to be something important. Children are egocentric and if they think a topic has no place in their lives then getting them to make life long changes will not happen. Since children are driven by wants it will be hard to break the sugar habit if they do not understand the reason why. They also need mentoring and examples to help make any lifestyle changes occur. Here are ways to get your child to take nutrition and healthy eating … Continue reading

Family Fitness With Your Toddler

If we want to prevent future health problems in our children, then we need to be encouraging fitness while they are young. If they start off life with exercise and healthy eating, they are more likely to continue it into their adult years. So I am going to be writing a series on how you can incorporate family fitness into your home. And believe it or not, it starts with your toddlers. Once children start walking, they have the opportunity to begin a healthy lifestyle. That means allowing your child to walk, not always confining them to a stroller. If … Continue reading

Family Influence on Mental Health

I’ve been wondering and I’ve come to the conclusion that like so many other things in life, our mental health often represents our upbringing. I look at one side of my family. At my grandmother’s level of the family tree there were ten siblings. They were raised in a strong Catholic family, learned to help take care of one another (with ten of them, what more could you do), rely on one another, and be open and honest. Family was the focus of their lives. They had twelve people in a three bedroom house, so there was no choice but … Continue reading

Make Fitness a Family Affair

When I was growing up you did not hear too much about enjoying fitness with your children. I do not remember many parent/child classes. We just woke up on a lazy summer day wondering how we would spend it. The parents and kids basically did their own things. We did enjoy family times, such as going to the park and going out to the movies, but not too much regarding fitness specifically. Years passed and fitness became more popular. Classes started springing up all over the place. Now, there is a class for just about everything, even the hula-hoop! Taking … Continue reading

Healthy Dose of Watermelon

My family loves watermelon. Every year we buy a ton of them and quickly eat all of it. My two year old is especially fond of them. She can make a dinner out of just watermelon if I’d let her. Most kids are the same way and devour this beautiful fruit. I never gave the unassuming watermelon too much thought as a health food. I assumed it was a nice way to hydrate as it consists mostly of water as the name suggests. However, this lovely pink fruit has more to it than simple water. Watermelon contains is hydrating. Watermelon … Continue reading

Being Frugal Is A Way Of Life – New FL Blogger Intro

Finally, I’m writing my Frugal Living introduction post. Better late than never, I always say. I wanted to say hello to my fellow FL living blogger Mary Ann Romans, and all of Families.com new bloggers. Since starting with this website about a month ago I’ve been having a lot of fun writing in my various topics. Being able to share and learn is a wonderful thing. As the title of my blog today states, being frugal truly is a way of life, not just one area of it. Many times someone may start out counting pennies in the area of … Continue reading

Eating Healthy On A Frugal Budget

Too many people tell me that the reason they eat such unhealthy meals is because healthy food is expensive. I tend to disagree with them, but converting these spendthrifts isn’t all that difficult when I tell them that our family of four eats pretty healthy and my food budget is half of the national average (according to my online research). I’m not a health nut by any means, but it doesn’t take a genius to figure out that junk food makes you feel terrible and it doesn’t cost less than healthier foods. Not to mention you’ll have fewer trips to … Continue reading
