How to Make Eating at Home Fun

Eating at home saves money. That is just a fact. I took my kids out to lunch at a family friendly restaurant for a treat, and with tip we spend half of our weekly food bill that feeds not only the kids and I but also my husband. Since we don’t often eat out, I had forgotten how much it really costs to eat out these days. Still, the kids love to do it. In fact, eight times out of ten that would normally be their choice. Well, it was that way, before I started getting more purposeful about making … Continue reading

Graduating from middle school, high school or college is a huge deal for many families. Consequently, commencement ceremonies are often followed by massive parties celebrating a graduate’s accomplishments. Fortunately, all the pomp and circumstance doesn’t have to break the bank. Sweet Turkey Day Fun

Turkey Day is so close I can smell it. So can my 7-year-old. However, it’s not make-ahead cranberry sauce, green bean casserole or stuffing that we’re sniffing. Rather, our kitchen is covered in chocolate. Thanks to the crafty folks at Kellogg’s our pint-sized Thanksgiving guests will be chowing down on homemade chocolate cereal turkey parts. My daughter caught sight of the adorable, edible treats a few mornings ago while perusing the back of the Rice Krispies box. She’s been begging to make them ever since. Last night she got her wish. We went to town hand molding sticky turkey legs … Continue reading

The High Price of Being Thankful

Tis the season for homemade turkey. If you are a parent of elementary-aged kids, then “homemade” is code for “handmade,” which basically means that the exterior of your refrigerator is coated with dozens of construction paper birds. Mine is. With 10 days and counting until Thanksgiving, my 7-year-old has already come home from school with no less than 14 handcrafted turkeys. Kind of makes me wonder how much time is allotted for arts and crafts versus reading, writing and arithmetic. Regardless, I’m happy to display my child’s feathery masterpieces. In fact, I am particularly fond of the handprint bird she … Continue reading

Fun with Halloween Face Paint

Fortunately, you don’t have to be a Hollywood make-up artist to transform your kid from cute to creepy this Halloween. By using quality products and following a few simple steps your children can say goodbye to uncomfortable plastic masks and hello to an elaborately decorated face that will elicit a chorus of oohs and aahs from friends, family and neighbors. One of the easiest face painting ideas for Halloween is Dracula. The popular vampire is known for his pale skin and bloody lips. However, you could spice up the look by creating a female vampire with long eyelashes and deep-purple … Continue reading

More Fun Ways to Cool Off

Here we go again! I would say that the heat is on, but it never really turned off. We’re still baking in oppressive heat and humidity, as Mother Nature makes darn sure we know that summer is here. Fortunately, I was born and raised in Hawaii, so dealing with tropical conditions is nothing new. If there is one thing people from the Aloha State know how to do, it’s how to have fun in the sun. If you are looking for fun ways to cool off, don’t rely solely on swimming pools, water parks and air conditioning. Rather, grab the … Continue reading

Indoor St. Patrick’s Day Fun

Mother Nature and the St. Patrick’s Day leprechaun must be at war in my neck of the woods because after a string of cloudless days forecasters are predicting that March 17th will be a major washout. Thunder, lightning, heavy rain, fog; everything that could possibly cancel an outdoor St. Paddy’s Day celebration will descend upon our city this Thursday. Consequently, I will be moving our green-themed festivities indoors. Still, we won’t let the gloomy weather put a damper on our St. Patrick’s Day fun. Here are some of the activities we’re planning for the holiday: Look Like a Leprechaun Fill … Continue reading

How to Make Homemade Butter

Making your own butter can be a way of saving money when butter prices are high or when you just want a fun activity to do with the family. Homemade butter generally has a creamier textured and the recipe can be changed to suit your taste. You can make homemade butter completely from scratch short of milking your own cow, or you can start with ready made butter and turn it into a specialty butter, such as herbed or honey butter. Butter from Scratch Making butter from scratch requires only two ingredients, although varying the types of these ingredients can … Continue reading

How to Spice Up Your Holiday Party

Tired of the same ol’, same ol’ Christmas parties that feature tone-deaf Uncle Jack singing karaoke in the corner and Aunt Lucy forcing you to try her latest tofu creation? Then, consider hosting your own holiday fiesta this season with a spicy theme. If you don’t want to go whole hog by hosting an extravagant costume night (think elves, reindeer and Christmas movie characters), then go simple by decorating in a single color and having guests dress in red and green. Other theme options include: Hawaiian Christmas I was born and raised in Hawaii, and while we don’t typically greet … Continue reading
