Hop Aboard the Candy Train and Other Festive Crafts for Kids

Now that the kids are out on winter break your home is probably not as quiet (or clean) as it was a week ago. To regain some semblance of order you might consider emptying your craft closet and assembling the following kid-friendly holiday crafts. Not only will they help your children channel their energy into something worthwhile, but also your home will be filled with festive decorations.

Note: Adult supervision is required on projects that involve hot glue.

CHRISTMAS CANDY TRAIN

Materials:

Hot glue gun

1 unopened roll of hard candy (Lifesavers)

4 wrapped peppermint candies

1 wrapped caramel

1 wrapped chocolate kiss

Yarn or string

Directions:

Using hot glue gun, adhere four wrapped peppermint candies to corners of the Lifesavers roll--the peppermint candies are the wheels of the train.

Glue a caramel to top of one end the train.

Glue chocolate kiss on top of caramel.

You can use the candy train as a tree ornament, by gluing a small length of string to the top of the train.

HANDPRINT CHRISTMAS WREATH

Materials:

Green construction paper

Red construction paper or red ribbon

Pencil

Scissors

Glitter or glitter glue

Directions:

Have your child trace his or her hand on a piece of green construction paper. (If you have a younger child, then trace his hand yourself.)

Repeat until you have 10 handprints.

Cut out each handprint.

Glue the handprints together in a wreath shape, with the wrists overlapping a bit.

Tie red ribbon into a bow and glue on wreath or make a bow from red construction paper.

Embellish wreath with glitter or glitter glue. You could also use buttons, stickers or paint to decorate wreath.

HAND AND FOOT REINDEER

Materials:

Brown, tan and orange construction paper

Pencil

Scissors

Glue

Googly eyes

Directions:

Trace your child's foot on a piece of brown construction paper, then cut out. This will be the reindeer's head.

Trace child's hands on tan or orange construction paper, then cut out. These will be the reindeer's antlers.

Glue the handprint antlers to the top of the reindeer head.

Glue eyes in place.

Draw a nose (or cut one out from red construction paper) and a mouth.

Hang for everyone to enjoy!
