If you are not able to travel to our nation's capital in time for tomorrow's inauguration festivities, don't fret. You can celebrate the momentous occasion in the comfort of your own home. Make the historic event a family affair by hosting an inauguration party. Here are some tips to get you started: Fire Up the DVR. Many schools are allowing students to watch the parade and swearing-in ceremony during class time. However, you can record the events at home and run it once the family is reunited during the evening. By doing so you can discuss as a family why the day is so significant. Decorations. Go with a patriotic theme. Think red, white and blue balloons, streamers, plates, cups and napkins. Some party shops are also selling presidential place mats, Obama napkin rings, and a Yes We Can! banners and stickers. Food. You can't have a party without food, right? Carry over the patriotic theme to your menu by setting out blue tortilla chips and red salsa. You could also serve red chili or white pasta with red tomato sauce. Another option: Serve Barack Obama's favorite foods such as pizza, tacos and sushi. For dessert consider making a patriotic cake. Just frost a sheet cake with vanilla icing and use fresh blueberries and strawberries to create an American flag design. Get the Kids Involved. Younger children might not grasp the significance of tomorrow's festivities, but they can enjoy the event by participating in fun activities. For example, you could host your own Inauguration Day parade. Simply decorate an old broom stick with red, white and blue streamers and have your little ones march around the family room waving parade sticks and mini American flags.
