I Love Mom Wall Hanging

Mom will love this gift and Grandma and Grandpa will as well. This idea can easily be adjusted for others, by changing the number of designs used and the "I Love..." part, replacing "Mom" with the appropriate name. These wall hangings make great gifts for birthdays or other special times, so make one for everyone you love!

Items Needed:

  • Placemat (preferably a fabric one)
  • Fabric in two other colors
  • Scissors
  • Craft Glue
  • Iron on letters (optional)
  • Ribbon

Start with a new fabric placemat in a color that Mom likes or in a color that matches the room where you want her to display the wall hanging. Turn the placemat the opposite way from how you would lay it on the table if you were eating. You want the sides to become the top and bottom and the top and bottom to become the sides.

You will need two other pieces of fabric in colors that contrast with each other and with the placemat. You are going to trace a heart pattern onto these fabrics and cut out enough hearts to cover the placemat. Make rows of hearts across the background, alternating the colors. Start with the opposite color as you begin a new row.

You need an uneven number of rows, so you'll have a center row. In the center, you are going to attach the "I Love Mom" part. You can use iron-on letters or cut out letters from the fabric that is leftover from cutting out hearts.

Wall Hanging

Attach a string of ribbon to each corner at the top of the placemat, from behind. Pull the ends of the ribbon together and tie in a bow. You will use this to hang the piece on the wall.

Variation:

Attach letters for the words "I" and "Mom," and glue on a heart shaped piece of craft foam or a small wooden heart cutout instead of spelling out the word love. Add trim if desired.

That's a neat idea -- and pretty straightforward too ! Thanks Sherry!

We did something similar at the preschool where I worked and our Moms loved it.
