Independence Day Gear

Dress your kids in their own cute creations to show their patriotic spirit for Independence Day:

Patriotic Ribbon Shirt

You can use a red, white, or blue t-shirt or even a tank top for this project. You will also need ribbon in a red, white, and blue design. If you can't find any ribbon like this, glue thin red, white, and blue ribbons together side by side or cut thin strips of patriotic fabric, fold in thirds, and crease with an iron so the rough edges are hidden. Glue in place if necessary. Cut strips about 5-6 inches long and form a ribbon loop (shown below). Pin, sew, or use washable fabric glue to attach ribbon loops randomly all over the shirt.

Ribbon loop

Add ribbons to barrettes and hair scrunchies too or make a headband from ribbon. Just wrap a length of ribbon around your little girl's head to get the appropriate measurement and cut off the necessary amount of ribbon. Then, cut off two inches and add a 1" piece of elastic. Sew to one end of the ribbon and them to the other end. Place the elastic in the back so it won't show, or add a rose ribbon or other embellishment to hide the elastic.

Super Simple T-shirts

All you need for this design is a white t-shirt and red, white, and blue, washable fabric paints. Have children paint the flag on the shirt, or lightly sketch the image of the flag and let them fill in the lines with paint. Let them add fireworks and other designs to their taste.

You can also make patriotic designs on your computer and print these off on iron-on transfer paper (make sure they will face the right way when ironed on). Adults should handle the ironing or carefully supervise.
