Do you know what an advent calendar is? Basically, it is a cool calendar that helps you mark off the days until Christmas.

Now, let's get on to making one so you can start marking off the days!

Paper Advent Calendar

hollyHere's what you need:

  • The December page from a calendar or a blank calendar
  • Markers
  • Decorative stamps, stickers, or trinkets
  • Glue
  • Individually wrapped candy
  • Tape
  • Stapler
  • Ribbon

Here's what you need to do:

If your calendar page isn't printed, look at a calendar and write down the days and dates appropriately within each square using brightly colored markers.

Decorate the calendar page any way you like. Stamp it, add stickers, draw designs, and make it look festive. You can glue or staple some trim or ribbon to the edges if you like. Staple ribbon to the top to hang it up.

Tape a piece of candy onto each square up to Christmas Day. Every day, after getting permission of course, you can remove a candy and cross off that day, bringing you one day closer to Christmas.

Here's another idea for one that's a bit more substantial:

Fabric Advent Calendar

  • Velcro
  • Stapler
  • Ribbon and trim
  • Terrycloth or felt

Here's what you need to do:

Mark off a calendar grid on a large piece of craft foam (12" x 18" at least). Write the days and dates with markers or paint. Decorate as desired adding trim around the edges. Staple ribbon to the top for hanging.

Using red terrycloth (inexpensive hand towels) or felt for stockings or using green for Christmas tree shapes cut out these or any use other shapes you desire. Staple small squares of Velcro to the calendar and to stockings or trees. Attach each image to the calendar, and pull one away each day.

I hope he enjoys it (and his Mommy does too!).

Counting off the days seems to make the wait go by quicker. I hope you guys have fun with this and that you and yours have a wonderful holiday season.

My mother made a treat/present advent calendar for my kids. Each child has a Santa head attached to a long fabric rope. For each day there is a treat or small present attached with ribbon to the rope They get one each day until Christmas.
