Let's Talk Turkey... Crafts that is!

Your little goblins will begin making assorted gobblers at school but that doesn't mean you can't still do a few turkey crafts at home. These ideas are also a good way to help little ones that don't yet go to school to feel included. They too can make crafts to hang beside those made by big brothers and sisters.

Hands on Turkey Craft

This one can be a tiny bit messy, but if you choose washable craft paints, it's not bad at all. It's also very simple so even tiny tots can participate with adult help.

You'll need assorted colors of craft paint such as brown, tan, orange, red, and yellow. You can use any paper you like. Pour some tan paint onto a paper plate. Dip your child's whole hand, palm down, into the paint. Have your child press his or her hand on some newspaper to get rid of excess paint.

Then, with fingers spread out wide, have your child press his hand to the paper you are decorating. Wash the hand, then press the thumb into brown paint. Remove the excess as described above, and press the thumb onto the center of the lower half of the handprint (this will be the turkey's head and neck).

Dip fingers into orange, red, and yellow and press in between the tan fingers in the handprint. Use a fingertip to dot some red paint on the turkey's chin to make the bead. When dry, draw eyes or glue on some tiny googly eyes or sequins.

Turkey Dinner with all the Trimmings

Draw (or print from your computer) a picture of a table. Help small children cut images of turkey, pie, and other trimmings, from magazines or print some and cut them out. Let your child "set the table" for Thanksgiving dinner by applying the images with a glue stick. Add images of candles and flowers too for a really festive table.

I never thought about letting my kids make their own thanksgiving table that is a really great idea.

Thanks, Beannie; you'll be surprised how much fun it is. We did this at the preschool where I used to work, and the kids enjoyed it. It turns out really cute.
