Family Fun Week in Review

We are in that weird transition time of the end of the summer and the beginning of fall and school. With that in mind, I’ve been including more educational and logic games on the blog the last few weeks to wake up those brains. If you have school age children you can try Bulls and Cows, or the addictive computer game of Gemsweeper. Both will get those logical brains thinking. Magnetic Poetry Fun offers your family a chance to leave messages, play with words, and discover their own poetic sides. Fuse Bead Fun encourages you to break out those Hama … Continue reading

Magnetic Poetry Fun

Is there poetry on your refrigerator? Magnetic poetry is a great addition to your house if you have children who are old enough to read and old enough to not eat the magnets! Besides, it’s a lot more fun than regular refrigerator magnets. The magnetic poetry kits come with lots of words printed individually on small thin strips of magnets. I love having these random words on my kitchen appliances. I’ve never seen a child (or an adult for that matter) who can resist rearranging the words. Playing with words encourages original thought, experimenting with language, and creativity. It’s a … Continue reading

Make a Reading Nook for Your Child

What do you remember about your childhood books? Do you remember falling into new worlds? Acting them out in the garden? Hiding under the covers or in a cosy corner while you read a book? The fall and winter seasons are the perfect time to cuddle up with a book in a reading nook. Dedicate a corner of the living room, rec room, or a child’s room to creating an interactive reading and writing center for your primary-aged children. A reading nook should be private and cozy, but it should also be accessible to the children. Place a small carpet … Continue reading

Genealogy Haiku

Sometimes, it can be fun to take a break from your genealogy research and spend a few minutes having some fun with genealogy concepts. This is especially true when something is frustrating you! I find it amusing to write haiku poems about things that frustrate me. It’s a nice stress release, and it often gives me something to laugh about. It changes my mood, and let’s me get back to work. A haiku poem is an excellent way to have some fun with words. The subject matter can be anything you want it to be, including your favorite hobby, genealogy. … Continue reading

Sick Day Survival Games

We haven’t been having much fun at my house this month. Instead, we’ve had one sick child after another. I’m always glad when they are feeling well enough to get restless. Here are some things we do on recovery days when they are feeling better, but still not up to par. I have a small dry erase board that is also a magnetic board. We have the low odor type of dry erase markers. The kids can draw, or if I have time we can play tic-tac-toe or dots. The magnetic part is fun, too. We have some architectural magnets, … Continue reading

Speak of the Dove-L

(In case you didn’t get that subject line, it’s a play on the phrase “Speak of the devil.”) Wow! No sooner had I written a blog entry (May 29, 2006) about Dove health and beauty products than I received a wonderful surprise from them! When my husband brought in the mail yesterday he tossed an envelope from Dove on my desk. Little did I know what surprises awaited me when I finally opened it this morning! Because of the flatness of the envelope I pretty much expected a few thin sample packets, maybe a few coupons thrown in along with … Continue reading
