Baby’s 5 Senses and How They Develop over the First Year

Have you seen the commercial on PBS aimed at educating parents and I assume encouraging parents to be more patient with their baby’s messes. It says, “Babies are natural born explorers. They have to try things over and over and over again.” You see the baby spilling the cereal on the floor as they point out that it’s a baby’s nature to do so. It’s true, as anyone with babies or toddlers can tell you–babies learn by exploring. Lacking the adult means of communicating information, these little people use their senses to learn about the world around them. Take a … Continue reading

Just listen!

We learn through our senses, but the most dominant of these senses is the sense of sight. Learning with other senses can enhance your child’s learning experience. Sometimes, we just need to be encouraged to use them! What do I hear when I listen from my window? I hear the sound of the Pacific Northwest rain. This June has been cold and rainy here so far, and so the little drips and sometimes torrents of rain have been pouring down outside my window. When we go for a walk, I hear the splash of my daughter’s boots in the puddles. … Continue reading

P is for Pumpkin

October is pumpkin season! Take advantage of this wonderful time of year to engage your child in learning and the world around him. Pumpkins seem to have a charm and appeal that makes kids delight over going to the pumpkin patch. If you don’t believe me try asking your children if they would like to go to the beet farm or squash patch instead. So head on out to the pumpkin patch for some fun and learning with your kids. A pumpkin patch makes an excellent field trip. Both kids and adults can enjoy cider, hayrides, and pumpkin picking. During … Continue reading

A Whole World Curriculum – Learning About Other Lands And People

I lived in Maryland when first homeschooling my girls and the school board is pretty relaxed with the curriculum. You can use a traditional curriculum and workbooks or create your own, as long as the children are given an overall education. Truthfully, my kids were bored to tears with workbooks and textbooks, so I decided to make a curriculum that would really stimulate their senses and be fun at the same time. I knew my daughters liked learning about other lands and people, so I bought a world map and taped it to the dining room wall—-our makeshift classroom for … Continue reading

Valorie’s Read Aloud Picks for May

Welcome to a new feature of the baby blog and one that’s dear to my heart. Reading out loud to your baby is one of the best activities you can engage in. Sometimes parents ask me how early should you start reading and my answer is as soon as you possibly can! The sing-song pattern of simple rhyming books help babies learn language patterns. Board books that have textures engage their senses, and even the simple act of handling a book and learning which way is right side up, believe it or not, is an important reading skill. Read while … Continue reading

Where to Get Your Party On During Mardi Gras

As I mentioned in a previous blog we’re just wrapping up Christmas celebrations at our home (round three of gift opening took place on Sunday—the Epiphany or Three Kings Day) and now another big celebration is just around the corner. Mardi Gras (a.k.a. Carnival) is less than a month away and if you plan to party like a college coed at the world’s hottest Fat Tuesday blowouts then you’d better make your travel plans now. Tickets to the best parties in New Orleans, Rio de Janeiro and Trinidad are going fast. The festivities peak on February 5th and lucky for … Continue reading

Scripture Study: 1 Nephi 11:1-11

Lehi had a vision within a dream, and Nephi wants to know the meaning of the dream. Taken up in a vision of his own, he converses with the Spirit of the Lord, who explains the interpretation to him. This is one of my favorite chapters in 1 Nephi. 1. For it came to pass after I had desired to know the things that my father had seen, and believing that the Lord was able to make them known unto me, as I sat pondering in mine heart I was caught away in the Spirit of the Lord, yea, into … Continue reading
