Discipline: Playing the Guessing Game

One of the toughest challenges of parenting is disciplining kids. And as if knowing, when, where, and how much to dole out weren’t tough enough, there are times when you are also forced to figure out who is responsible when more than one child is involved in an altercation, so that you are disciplining the right kid. For example, say you are making dinner in the kitchen while your kids are “playing” in the basement. Suddenly, your peaceful salad-making routine is shattered by your son screaming, “Moooooooom, she pushed me into the TV!” This is immediately followed by your daughter … Continue reading

Which celebrities will be shimming and shaking their way to the shiny mirror ball trophy on the upcoming season of ABC’s hit show “Dancing with the Stars?” Michael Jordan, Dan Quayle, Anderson Cooper, and Rachael Ray’s names have been thrown around, but big wigs at ABC will only say that the official cast will be revealed on August 25th and the dance competition will premiere on September 22nd. So let the guessing game begin. Yesterday several publications named singer Toni Braxton as one of the contestants for the seventh season of the reality TV show. Fun Egg Carton Learning Games

I’ve been asking my friends for creative ideas and here’s one from a Kindergarten teacher that I just love. It’s such an open ended craft with great learning potential. My friend uses this as an introduction to numbers. She takes empty egg cartons and labels each compartment with numbers 1 through 12. A permanent marker works, but you can get really fancy and do stickers or computer printouts. The children have to find one of something, two of something else and so on. She provides things like counting bears, paper clips, buttons, pennies, or small pebbles. She says it’s a … Continue reading

Make a Guess by Touch Game

The other day at the toy store I noticed a new toy. To play, you stick your hand in a small black plastic dome. The door to the dome is covered with strips of fabric so that don’t see inside. The toy also comes with small plastic objects, the idea being that you try to guess what object you are touching. I’m sure the prepackaged game is fine, but it’s so easy to make your own. One of our standard Christmas party games is to guess what’s in the stocking. It’s a great game for utilizing your brain, and developing … Continue reading

Video Games for The iPhone

There is a good chance that you will soon see video games coming to the Apple iPhone. Several companies, including Apple itself, are possibly working on bringing new software games to this device. while iPhone users can already play some games through the Safari browser, so far, there have been no video games that are native to the iPhone. Here is what is happening. Let’s start with Apple. The company recently released a new iTunes update (7.3) to make it more compatible for the iPhone. In that update is a bit of new code that hints to having games load … Continue reading

BITSS of Touch

Any touch can quickly turn from good to bad. So too can sexual activity and the grooming process that leads up to sexual abuse. Therefore, it is VERY important your child understands good touches/bad touches. Just as adults have the authority to say no at any time, so too do children. If someone is cuddling them and then tries to touch their private parts, children need to know this is a bad touch and they can say no and go and tell someone, even if the cuddle was good at first and they really wanted it. Most children are familiar … Continue reading

More Thoughts on the Disney-Lucasfilm Buyout

Now I’ve had some time to think about it, I have more sophisticated thoughts about the Disney-Lucasfilm buyout. The idea that I’m struggling with the most is that Disney wants to keep releasing more films every few years into infinity. One day soon, the original trilogy will be buried under a pile of new films, and I just feel so strange about that. According to George Lucas, the script treatments for episodes 7-9 are totally original; they won’t follow any specific plots from the novelized extended universe. Disney’s most likely going to follow Lucas’ scripts, but if it keeps making … Continue reading
