Make A Tin Lantern

A tin lantern looks really pretty set outside during dusk and after dark. You can make a row of them and line your patio, or just one to set on a patio table. This project will require adult supervision. Any child can create a design for the lantern. But only children who are old enough to use a hammer should be allowed to hit the nails.

Supplies:

Plain metal tin can - soup can, paint can, larger food can Nail - different sized nails will make different sized holes Hammer Strong Wire - if the can does not have a handle Sand Candle

Directions:

1. Make sure that the can is empty and clean.

2. Draw the pattern that you would like to punch into the can on a piece of paper. You can make a geometric design, flower, butterfly, star, sun, for the outdoorsman you could punch a canoe or bear. The ideas are endless.

3. Tape the pattern to the can.

4. Choose a nail to use to punch your design. Larger nails will make larger holes and allow more light to shine through. You can make your pattern with a variety of large and small nails or use one size.

5. Then with one hand hold the nail over the pattern. Hit the nail with the hammer until it punches through the can.

6. Repeat this until all of the holes on your pattern have been made.

7. Then remove your pattern and tape it to another side of the can. You will probably want to repeat this three to four times so the pattern is all around the can.

8. If your can does not have a handle then you can create one. Punch two holes near the top across from each other. Then use a piece of wire and loop it through the holes, twisting the end around itself, to create a handle.

9. Place about one inch of sand in the bottom of the can. This will prevent it from tipping over in the wind.

10. Push a candle in the sand until it is touching the bottom of the can. Scented candles are nice because they give off an aroma along with light.
