Sleepover Fun!

A couple weekends ago we hosted a sleepover. The guest was my three-year old nephew. For his birthday a couple months earlier, we had given him the gift of our company! Pretty pompous, I know. The idea is to allow him and my daughter, the only kids in our family close to three years of age, to play unencumbered and uninterrupted by the older kids. They rarely get to sit down in front of a puzzle together or do just about anything as a duo. He lives an hour away and on the ride back home, both little ones fell … Continue reading

Make Sleepover Gear

Maybe boys don’t call them slumber parties, and maybe girls don’t really use that term much any more either. It doesn’t really matter which term you prefer, slumber party, sleepover, or what have you. If you’re going to such a party, you’ll need something to carry your stuff and you are going to need a pillow. Here are two great ways to make sleepover bags and matching pillows: No Sew Fringe Fleece Bag and Pillow Cut two rectangular shaped pieces of fleece the same size, about 20” wide by 24” long. Seasonal Pillowcases – A Year of Fun

I’ve been cleaning out closets today. And no, I’m not going to tell you that cleaning closets is a fun thing to do. I did find something fun to tell you about though. A few years ago my thoughtful and creative sister-in-law gave the kids a very fun present. She made pillowcases for all three of the boys. She collected fabric all year long. When the seasonal fabrics went on clearance she picked out her favorites. It doesn’t take much fabric to make a pillowcase, and she got some great ones for not much money. She made them cases for … Continue reading

The “Joke” Stage

The other day, I heard two young children talking on the bus—they were taking turns telling each other jokes that they appeared to be making up on the spot. While I didn’t exactly understand the humor behind each joke they told, they certainly were tickled with themselves and each other and it reminded me of when my own children were going through the “joke” stage. It was all about trying to make up and tell silly and amusing jokes. Story-telling and jokes become great fun for children around the time they enter elementary school. 5-8 year-olds are prime members of … Continue reading

Getting Creative At Home

You may have noticed that I often tend to focus on creative ways to play at home, as a family. That is directly related to the fact that we are not the over-scheduling types, leaving us plenty of time at home together to be silly and find interesting ways to entertain ourselves. On a recent Sunday morning, my daughter and I were on my king bed playing with Mr. Potts and the rest of the Chitty gang. She was pretending that they were going potty, taking naps, going down slides and having a picnic. As she was coming up with … Continue reading
