Camping Fun: Playing With Rocks

For many people, summer equals camping. I confess to being a person who prefers the comforts (and fridge) of a cabin to sleeping in a tent, but the idea is essentially the same. Nature abounds and nature activities are the order of the day. This is one of the joys of learning in the summer. It’s so easy to get out and enjoy yourself outdoors. If you are hanging out at the campsite making dinner or setting up camp, the kids will probably have fun moving into and out of the tent and arranging it endlessly. They can also traipse … Continue reading

Get Paid for Having Fun on TV

I love having fun in the great outdoors swimming, biking, sailing, hiking, and running. However, when it comes to bungee jumping from the skid of a helicopter into an active volcano or rappelling down an iceberg, you can count me out. Needless to say, my fear of heights (or more accurately, my fear of falling from high places) automatically disqualifies my family from appearing on TV’s latest reality series. The producers of “Amazing Race,” “The Biggest Loser,” and “The Office” are currently searching for America’s most outgoing families to compete in exciting outdoor challenges in the nation’s most beautiful national … Continue reading

Making Camping Fun for Kids

Confession time: I’ve never camped with my own child. To those who know me well, this is no major revelation given that I’ve only roughed it a grand total of four times in my entire life, and all of those trips took place while I was swinging single. What can I say? I’m not a big camper. Still, I don’t want to deprive my child of the opportunity to commune with nature, so this summer I’ve decided to pitch a tent with my preschooler (and others). The only problem: all my camping experiences came while I was in college when … Continue reading

5 Fun Things About This Writer

No matter how serious we can be in life, there has to be some time for fun. You’ve heard the old saying “All work and no play….”, well it’s true. In life it is important to remember that laughing and spending time with those we love should rank high in our priorities in life, even if other priorities require us to be more on the serious side. In honor of that theory, I’d like to take a moment and say hello here in the Fun Blog. Most of you probably know me from several other blogs, namely the Scrapbooking Blog … Continue reading

Week in Review – Fun

If you have sick children at home, here are some Sick Day Survival Games. Reading the same books your children are reading provides a unique chance for discussion and connection. Take a quick look at Read What They Are Reading. Try an old Scout camping recipe that makes easy doughnuts out of canned biscuits. Read the recipe and directions at Canned Biscuit Doughnuts. Hot chocolate tastes good on cold mornings, too. Why not try cinnamon-vanilla or mocha raspberry, or experiment with other flavors. To find out how, see Flavored Hot Chocolate Fun. And as long as the kids are in … Continue reading

Family Fun At The State Fair—A Day Of Pig Races And Deep Fried Pickles

There aren’t too many places on the planet where you can watch a retired NASCAR announcer provide color commentary on a race between four pot-bellied pigs speeding around a sawdust track, and then 2 hours later gnaw unforgivably on a deep fried pork chop-on-a-stick. It happens daily at the Wisconsin State Fair. The annual 10-day event is famous around these parts for deep-fried everything, food-on-a-stick, a giant slide and world-class agricultural venues. What more could you ask for, right? That was my thought when I decided to brave the crowds (more than 800,000 descend on State Fair Park in Milwaukee … Continue reading

Father’s Day Fun

Father’s Day is rapidly approaching. Poor dads. They often seem to get left out. The kids make cute crafts or write poems for Mother’s Day in school, but not for Father’s Day. It’s a shame really. Dads are important. And good fathers should be celebrated. Everyone likes to know they are appreciated. Shopping for presents for my husband is hard sometimes. He wants more big ticket items like motorcycles, trips, or new computers. And while I am thrilled with mango scented shampoo and a bar of really great chocolate, it’s hard to find anything that would thrill him for such … Continue reading

Camping In The Living Room

Normally I do not allow my children to play in the living room. I like to keep it looking nice and toy free in case someone comes to the door. We have a large family room upstairs that they are supposed to play in. But today, I let them camp in the living room. We brought in the dining room chairs and tied a sheet to them creating the top of the tent. Then we hung other sheets off of the sides to form the walls. I turned on the fire in the fireplace while they brought their pillows and … Continue reading

A Kids Frugal Guide to Rainy Day Fun: 40 Things To Do

Rainy days can be really boring. And here in the Midwest we’ve certainly had our share lately. In fact, as I write this, the rain is pouring down and the noise is escalated by our wonderful sky lights. Yes, that was a tad bit of sarcasm. So what can you do to entertain the kids on a rainy day that doesn’t cost a lot? Lots of things! I asked my two eleven year olds to help me brainstorm some ideas. Here’s a nice long list of things to do together when the weather is less the cooperative. Read a book … Continue reading

Summer Lovin’!

It’s that time of year again, the kids are out of school, the sun is out, and the kids are itching to get outside and play! This is my favorite time of year and the summer weather has definitely hit here in Utah! As usual the first few weeks of summer are filled with excitement. The kids are eager to get outside and play with their friends, but after the first few weeks the newness has worn off and you are left trying to find something to occupy your children until school starts back up again in the fall. For … Continue reading
