Do Your Pets Factor into Your Holiday Plans?

Do you make your holiday plans around your pets? That’s an assertion that the Associated Press recently made in an article: pet owners revolve their late-December events around their pets. Examples given by the AP include taking holiday-themed photos of pets, using these or other pictures with the animal for seasonal cards, buying pets gifts (the article maintains that just over half of pet owners do this), and even creating special menus for the pet so it can have a holiday meal alongside its human family. There are two sides to this: one, in which a little holiday cheer is … Continue reading

Parents and Christmas Firsts

Like it or not the holidays make people very nostalgic. It’s hard for some parents not to think of their son or daughter’s first Christmas when hanging stockings or trimming the tree. Then, there’s the tidal wave of memory triggers that come to us via the media. For example, if I see that TV commercial about the mom being “forced” to buy her daughter a new cellphone plan because “it’s the first Christmas that she won’t be home,” I’m going to hurl. Do you remember the first Christmas your child didn’t spend with you? I can’t imagine it’s a very … Continue reading

‘Twas the Day Before Christmas…

‘Twas the day before Christmas And there was excitement galore. The stockings were hung And presents were piled on the floor. Garland graced the stairs And ornaments adorned the tree Just begging to be batted By Mr. Meow and Tabby. But good they were being Because if they were not The man named St. Nick Would leave them to rot. Stayed away from temptation Did Murph and the cats And steer clear they made sure Of tantrums and spats. For they knew the man who bore gifts Kept lists of the naughty and nice And desperate were they to prove … Continue reading

Snowman Votives

Sometimes, without meaning to, we can leave kids out of much of the Christmas experience. They like to be included in the gift buying, the wrapping, the cooking. Here’s a beautiful, but easy, decoration families can have fun making together. These votives also make nice gifts for special people in the child’s life, teacher’s, grandparents, aunts and uncles, or babysitters. My twins first made these in kindergarten for a surprise parent gift. I treasure these little votives. Every year they bring a smile to face, as I remember my boys at five with their tiny little kindergarten fingers. Supplies you’ll … Continue reading

Make Your Own Gift Tags

One of the easiest ways to create your own gift tags is to simply draw some and cut them out from plain, print, or solid colored paper. You can use construction paper, cardstock, or anything else you like. You can also cut designs from covers of Christmas cards. This is a great way to make use of elements you already have around the house. To make them even nicer, punch a hole in one end and add some pretty string, yarn, ribbon. Another fun idea is to design your own gift tags on your computer. From the simplest program like … Continue reading

Easy Candy Cane and other Candy Inspired Crafts

These ideas are so simple that you can make as many as you like in no time at all. Chenille Candy Canes All you need is some red and white chenille stems (I grew up calling them pipe cleaners). Twist the ends of one red stem and one white stem together to secure them. Then, simply keep twisting them around each other until you reach the other end. Secure it, and then bend the top until you make it into the shape of candy cane. What could be easier? Hang your candy canes on the tree or decorate gift packages … Continue reading
