Heat Up Your New Year’s Eve Party

Our local YMCA always hosts a huge family-friendly New Year’s Eve party on the afternoon of December 31st. This year they’re going with a Hawaiian luau theme and are encouraging guests to don flower-print shirts, hula skirts and other island-inspired getups. Activities include make paper leis, swimming in the pool, participating in coconut relays and dining on mango/pineapple skewers, as well as other tropical treats. You may not have an indoor pool to entertain your guests, but hosting a Hawaiian-themed party on New Year’s Eve is not a bad idea. Luaus are a change from the standard winter-themed bashes that … Continue reading

The Many Marathons of runDisney

I just came in from my morning run with my dog, so it seems appropriate that now I’d sit down to write about the Disney Parks’ many marathons. I run for the sake of my health and my dog’s health, however, not so much for fun, so don’t expect to hear of me signing up for any of these any time soon. For 2012 runDisney has added another marathon to its schedule. The Los Angeles Examiner reports that on January 29, 2012 Disneyland will host the Tinker Bell Half Marathon. This is another event exclusively for women, joining the already-established … Continue reading

Marathon Party

When I ran my first marathon I skipped the traditional pre-race pasta party. Rather, my cousin and I held our own quiet carbo-loading shindig in the corner of a quaint Italian restaurant just off of Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. I was too nervous to surround myself with elite racers and other marathon veterans. Plus, I really didn’t have much of an appetite. I ended up forcing myself to eat my Penne a la Vodka while listening to my cousin wax poetic about the impending 26.2-mile run. Fast forward to my second marathon a few years later and I was more than … Continue reading
